Need some advice - FAST - on elliptical

SRP

Cathlete
Hey there - I need some opinions here. I planned to buy a ProForm XP 130 elliptical trainer this evening at Sears. I just found out a client at work is selling an Eclipse 1100HR for about $200 less than what I was going to pay. Does anyone know about the Eclipse? Is it any good? I've seen good comments about the ProForm (specifically from Imafitnessfreak) on this forum. Any thoughts, please?

If it plugs into an outlet, good deal! My freaking ProForm runs on D batteries and it drives me nuts!! I have rechargeable batteries but the thing still sucks them dry so fast!

Keep in mind...I am easy to please! I'd buy a mechanical bull if riding it would keep my heart rate up!:7

Batteries??? Good grief. I need to do some more research on these things. I think both of them are going to wait until I can actually try one out. I'm getting cold feet. Besides, I just talked to a fitness fanatic friend, and he says the home models generally aren't designed for the serious exerciser and might fall apart. He uses the souped up models at the gym.

Sarah - thanks for your quick response.

No...the store ones are not commercial grade...but they will not get commercial use either. The gyms need to have the heavy duty, super strong machines because
#1 they are going to be in near constant use from dawn til dusk
#2 they various weights of various people.

The gym model machines take a beating. The "at home" models do not need to be as solid because they will be used WAY less and by an already fit person. My DH and I are smaller...short with smaller frame, so we can get away with a non commercial grade equipment, even when we are using it every day.

Well, folks, I've decided to wait. Sorry for the panic attack here and thanks for the quick input.

I need something to give me intensity but low impact, and the elliptical sounds like the way to go. But sale or no sale, my caution has kicked in (belatedly) and I think I'd better do some exploring.

Another issue, if anyone wants to respond:
Yet another story turns up at work. A friend of a co-worker blew her knee out using one of these things. Ends up, this lady already had knee problems, but that does make me hesitate. I know there's no impact, but I guess I'd better make double sure that it's suited to my little old knees.

Shannon, I've owned a Proform treadmill twice (I know you're talking elliptical) I still have my second one. I got mine at Sears too & got the extended warranty. I haven't had any issues.

Hi Shannon, I have a Proform, it's been discontinued (Which is the reason I got it, good price). It has the ifit program, adjustable stride, and 6 preset workouts for me to choose from. I use it every now and then. I have no problems with it, it works great. I bought mine from Sears, which is a good thing. Because when I got it there was a problem in the resistance mag stripe on the back and I had to have someone come out and fix that for me. It was no cost to me to have them come out. But just make sure that you buy one from a place that will fix something if it should get damaged in shipping. Or for whatever problems that may or may not come up.

Like you said, she had prior knee problems. Also...not trying to start a fight but...most people who do not exercise has "blown out a knee" or knows someone who has. If the elliptical is too hard on your knees then most other forms of cardio will be, too. Swimming would be an exception.

I just love the elliptical...I think everyone should have one! It is zero impact so it doesn't bang up your joints. It is an excellent cardio workout.

If you rule it out because "such and such" was injured on it (I am guessing that wasn't the entire source of the problem) then you could easily rule out every form of cardio and exercise known to man.

Buy the elliptical! You'll LOVE it! Do some research so that you feel good about the purchase and have fun!!!

Hi,
Just wanted to say that an elliptical is a great form of cardio, I love my elliptical which I started using at the gym, then decided to buy one for home use and have never regretted it. My only problem is trying to incorporate at least once a week in my rotation.

Not to make you more confused about choosing, but I have an eliptical that I got at Sears..It works good, I did have to have them come out and adjust it when I first got it, because it was scraping and not a smooth action. they did and it worked well afterwards however, ... it is right next to my treadmill, and given the choice, I pick the treadmill every time.. I am not sure why but the "boring" factor of the Eliptical makes me not want to use it. It is gathering dust and I wish I had never bought it.

Well, I've decided not to buy any ellitical at all! I had just about convinced myself to get the ProForm at Sears and was going to pick it up today. But the more I thought about it, the more I didn't like the idea. Why? Pure aesthetics. My house is small but very open. I love the way I have it arranged now, very clean lines, everything in harmony. I've thought and thought about where in the heck I would put that thing, and I just don't have a good spot. I really have this thing against clutter, and no matter how great a workout the elliptical gives, it would look like clutter in my house. It would drive me nuts. So this time, fitness lost the battle. My knees and I will find other ways to get by.

If you are a tall person make sure the stride is at least 18. Also check the warranty. Warranties are a good indicator of the quality. Nautilus is 30 years frame, 10 years parts, 3 year labor. I just a Nautilus NE200 from Costco on Tuesday. It is soooo quiet, on a scale of 1-10 in noise with 1 being the lowest, this one is a 1. Good luck and enjoy whichever one you chose!

FYI - I have a ProForm too and was disturbed by the battery only deal but looked in the book - we ordered a wall outlet plug for like $49 and I love it. Also feel that the ProForm is a great solid piece of equipment. We got ours via eBay for like $350, down from $600-799 I think.

Enjoy!
