Need help with ordering Troy Lite

LeanneM

Cathlete
Hi everyone,

I need to get a new barbell system since the one I have is not that great. I've been searching the forums and reading past posts about the Troy Lite, and I think that it's the one that I'm going to order. Before I do so, though, I was wondering if some of the folks who already have the Troy could help answer some questions.

First, it seems like the only place to buy it is on-line at http://www.fitness1st.com. The S&H seem expensive, though, so has anyone found it anywhere else for a better price?

Also, I was going to order the complete system, which includes the bar, clips, four 2.5-pound plates, two 5-pound plates, and two 7.5-pound plates. Right now, I'm not very strong, but I want to have a system that I won't outgrow, so I was thinking about ordering some extra 10-pound plates. What other plates would you recommend that I order? Is there a combination that would provide maximum versatility?

Thanks *so* much for any help and advice anyone can offer!

RE: Need help with ordering Troy Lite?

To save shipping $$, I bought just the troy lite barbell and clips from fitness 1st, and then bought wt plates from Play It Again Sports and Target. I think I paid around $31 for the barbell & clips including shipping. If you have one of those stores near you, it's definitely a cheaper way to go. HTH!

RE: Need help with ordering Troy Lite?

Thanks, Jonahnah! That's a great idea! I wasn't sure if other plates would work on it, but it sounds like they would.

RE: Need help with ordering Troy Lite?

Leanne, you need to get the STANDARD size plates and they will work just fine with the Troy Lite bar. Make sure you don't get the olympic size. The difference is in the size of the opening. I believe standard plates have a 1" opening, and the olympic have a 2" opening. :)

RE: Need help with ordering Troy Lite?

As long as the plates have a 1" hole, they should work fine. Good luck--I'm very happy I finally got the barbell. I hope you love yours too!

Hi Leanne!!

You're quite welcome. I wish I had thought to buy the plates separately -- I could've saved a bundle -- and I bought TWO sets

I miss my Melting friends, too. My life has been so crazy lately, and I've been overwhelmed with everything on my plate, so I decided to step back a bit from the forums and limit my posts to the Hater's thread, and a few random threads. I try to at least read the Melter's thread on occasion, just so I can see what y'all're up to ;) . Please pass my love and best wishes on to everyone in Meltsville! :)

Thanks, Michele -- I'll be sure to pass your words on! We miss you over there, and I'm sorry to hear that things have been so stressful for you! I hope that they calm down, and that things are better with your DS, too! Sending love and hugs your way!

I have always been very happy with my Troy Lite. I got the same combo of plates you mention, plus the 10 pounders. I regularly now use them all and have to purchase at least another set of 10 pounders for STS.

The thing about the Troy plates is that they keep well, they do not mark surfaces and don't look like crap after a while when the outer coating comes off.

I have always found Play it again to be a hit and miss affair and what they offer in plates is crappy in my area. So, I'd order the plates with my barbell and be done with it. As I did. Money well spent.

Thanks, Clare! I was actually thinking the same thing, for the same reasons. I'm worried, too, that if I pick up random plates from various sources/stores, they might not fit snugly together.

And so off to order . . . .

:)

I ordered the basic set with the plates and have been very happy with them. I even had a local distributor willing to work with me by throwing in my order with a huge order he was doing, but he still couldn't match the price, even with the shipping.

With STS coming up, I found Reebok plates at Target that aren't rubberized like the Troy plates, but they do have a rubber edge, so I picked up some more weights there when they were on sale. Were I to do it over, I would go ahead and get the full 80-lb maximum they recommend for the bar in the one order.

Hi Carolyn,

The shipping costs vary, depending on what you buy. (The more weights you throw into your cart, the higher the shipping becomes.) If you add items to your shopping cart, you can play with the shipping costs a bit.
