I took a look, and the Om about taking your shoes off before entering a house made me chuckle, because it is as much a custom here in Canada as it is in Japan. I always thought people on American tv shows left their shoes on as they frittered in and out of each others' apartments because it made for bad tv to have to stop and wait for people to put their shoes on and off all the time. It wasn't until about a year or so ago that I learned that living in the land of the free meant that I was free to trudge through living rooms in my mukluks. Kewl.

Hi,
I live in the US and in the region I live in, we remove our shoes as soon as we enter the house. We don't however remove them outside as the shoes would be stolen. It is considered rude not to remove your shoes as you would track dirt and mud etc into the house. It is as the article pointed out, alot more comfortable without shoes too!
