Nauseous after GS DVD workout

I have done weight training with a personal trainer 7 years ago and I've gotten fat and am back to working out. I had always done cardio and then weight training and then I saw that it's best to do weight training 1st. So I did a GS (think it was the back dvd) and then tried to get on my exercise bike and was nauseous. My heart rate was fine, blood pressure was fine and I'm not sure why I got nauseous.

I used to get nauseous when working legs with the personal trainer but I did not think I was not working out that hard.

Is this common for overweight/out of shape people or do I just have to work at even lighter weights until I get used to the program again?

If you haven't been working out lately, starting with the GS series is ambitious. It's one of the tougher workouts DVD's out there. I would recommend going slower, taking more breaks (pause the DVD player), and maybe lowering the weight a bit until you can get through the DVD without getting nauseous. Maybe starting with one of Cathe's total body workouts would be a better option for you. Good luck!

I have to agree with Christine. The GS series is tough stuff. I would definitely lower my weight. Cathe goes pretty heavy on a lot of the exercises.

Kudos to you for getting back into it!

Thanks, I'm only using 2# and 5# free weights and a 18# body bar so far. I quit when I'm unable to finish a set. The GS legs I cannot do the lunges with any weight !!!

I used to train heavy so I know the form and can do the exercises so I think in a month I'll be able to get my weight up quite a bit.

I have the Pure Strength VHS tapes and used to do those with no problem.

Guess being 7 years older and overweight that I'll have to take it much slower.

Hi parkercp,

Another thing to take into consideration is whether or not you've eaten before your workout. If I haven't eaten enough previously during the day to fuel my workout, I'll have a tendency to get nauseous.

You might try eating some good carbs an hour or two before your workout and see if it helps.

On the other hand, if you've eaten too close to the workout, or eaten too much, then you could also get nauseated from that.
