Natural PB question

I was in the grocery store last night and eyeing the smuckers jar. I haven't tried natural PB before & really want to make the switch, but I was scared off by all the goo floating on top :p So, is that oil I presume? and why don't I see that in the preservative-y ones? OY. I couldn't get over staring at the weird floating goo.

Hey Debbie!

Most, but not all, of the natural nut butters have oil floating on the top. It's just the natural oil from the nuts. Fat rises to the top. When you open the jar you will need to stir it and then store it in the refrigerator. You shouldn't have to stir it again after that.

And the reason you don't see it on the "preservative-y" ones is because those have additives that help the oil to stay mixed. I believe (but would have to check the label to be sure) that the non-natural PB's use partially hydrogenized oils so that they won't separate. That translates as trans-fats! Ugh.

ahhh, thanks ladies! I will be brave & get a jar this week :) I have a love affair w/ PB! Having some on an apple is seriously yum-O.

Hi Deb, I got the smuckers PB. It tastes just like peanuts. I guess that's probably what it is supposed to taste like huh?,LOL. But, the jar still sits in my fridge. I think it will take me some time to get to liking the taste. I will stick with Peter Pan for now! Good luck, I really hope you like it.

Oh, Meg! How I wish I didn't love natural PB. If it weren't so darn fattening, I think I would eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm so afraid of it, though, I actually measure out a tablespoon before using it! :(

Debbie, like you, I've been trying to go au natural with the PB. Take it from a die hard fan of Jiff, you'll need to add a little bit of honey to the natural stuff or it tastes just awful, IMO. I've been known to add a light sprinkling of kosher or sea salt, too, otherwise, it just tastes like plain ole unsalted peanuts. Honestly, I'd rather eat a handful of nuts than bother with the NPB, unless, of course, you add the salt and honey--THEN it tastes good--I promise. A natural PB sandwich with honey and raisins (or apple) is mighty delish:9

I don't think I'd go back to the old stuff after making the switch. I use a dab on a few crackers as a pre work out snack. Uber tastey!

I ran out of natural and had to use Jif recently. It was so sweet it almost gagged me! Refrigerate? I don't, but I guess I will start.

Or you could save your wrist and sloshing oil around and try SMART BALANCE Omega Natural Peanut Butter (creamy), which is tasty, but they do add a smidgen of natural sugar. My absolute favorite is Smuckers for taste. Also, look for a peanut butter mixer in kitchen stores. The mixer is supposed to make it easy to stir with no mess.

thanks all again! I shall be visiting the grocery store this week for sure (like I'm not there every other day for something...ha)

Debbie, I love NPB! I had a bit of a time liking it at first but now LOVE it. I buy Smucker's Crunchy All Natural. (only has peanuts) I was def a Jiff fan before but glad I made the change. Pus, it is a good fat you see floating...just use the PB in moderation. I have it (a small amount) every day. Also, here is a link for the PB Stirrer. Makes it much easier to stir w/o all the mess. Otherwise the oil runs all down the side of the jar:

Thanks Deb! Who would of thought they make PB stirrers...woah, nelly. Learn something new every day ;)

I love natural peanut butter but it's harder to find than the regular. The taste is very different (tastes like peanuts and it's not sweet at all) and yes you'll have to stir it.

I also have a natural peanut butter addiction. I think I could eat a jar per day. This post is making me really want some. Unfortunately, I have gallstones and cannot digest fats right now without extreme pain. So I cannot have any peanut butter until after my surgery. I am going through major withdrawals!

I forgot to mention in my previous post -- Wild Oats Supermarket has a machine there that will grind up the peanuts for you right there. Just go to their bulk isle and make as much peanut butter as you want to purchase. You can also bring your own clean containers -- just make sure you have the cashier weigh them first or else you will pay for their weight. Or you can buy a container there.

Oh, DebbieH, the mere mention of Smucker's Crunchy All Natural almost caused me to go into a swoon. :9 :9 :9 :9 :9 If only I could control myself around peanut butter. Darn. x(

Super Deb, I pour out the oil floating on top. I have to finish the jar quickly though or it'll dry out fast. Sometimes I pour out half the oil and stir it in as much as I can. We all have strange ways of eating, and that's one of mine. ;-)

i looovvee natural pb:) i usually store it upside down in my cupboard that way the oil rises to the bottom instead of the top. so, then it's not a problem when i open it up.
