I have a question for you gals who run.I was talking to Missy earlier today and she thought I had good speed but I don't know b/c I have nothing to compare it to.:)
I just did a 8 mile run in 79.5 min.Is this good? Should I try to kick it up a knotch? How fast does everyone else run? Not that I am trying to compare but I was just wondering if everyone as made their runs a little faster.I have through out the years but I don't think i can go much faster.
Thanks,
Lori:)

Is that outside or on a treadmill?? Regardless, that is great! I was only asking because it has been my experience that I tend to naturally run faster outside than on my treadmill.

I say kick it up...ALWAY kick it up!;-)

If you want to work on speed, you could always do a speed work session once a week.

I have always read that to run faster you need to run faster!

If you want to increase your speed then you should incoporate speed work into your running routine. Shorter runs that consist of intervals and/or tempo runs would work great. If you do that your pace for your long runs will get faster. It takes time to see significant increases but it's fun trying to get there!

Oh! Your current pace is good!:) :) :)

I'm sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow. I don't have a distance runner's body. I have a sprinter's body. So I run distance slowly. But I don't worry too much about it. Sounds like you're running about a 10 minute mile, which is pretty good.

I have been running for about 22 years now and I have lots of experience (I am 42 and still run!) It all depends on what your goal is. If you want to race and meet a particular time, then you should train accordingly. If you are just interested in running for fitness, then go at a pace that your are comfortable with. If I go on a long run, I usually run between 8 1/2 to 9 minute miles. If I am training, I kick it up a notch. There's lots you can do with running. You need to determine your goal and go from there. Have fun!!

I ran for years, and a ten-minute mile was about all my body wanted to do. Unless I ate some ice cream first, then I could really move it.
;-)

Ten minute miles are pretty respectably good, especially for a long distance like that. That's clipping along, not trudging.

It was my experience that doing speed drills did make me faster overall, but I wasn't that interested in suffering to earn speed. }(

I'm 49 and run 3 miles a day. I do a 10 minute mile, and that is absolutely as fast as my body will go. I always considered myself pretty slow, but there is no shame in running 10 minute miles. I did the Peachtree 10K in 60 minutes and was pretty proud of that!

Good job! :D

Thanks for your responses ladies:) I do alot of interval runs and my speed as increased alot over the last couple of years b/c of it. DH bought a treadmill for me 2 yrs ago so its only since then that I have really kept an eye on my speed.I found at first that I was comfy at 5.6 miles an hour, then 5.9 and now I can run pretty comfortably at 6.3 so thats quit an increase in the last couple of years.
I don't train to race b/c my knees won't let me:-( Aftet todays run I will probably wait until Sun to run again. They start to act up after a while.
And the reasonI do interval runs is to break the run up.I will do 30 min at a normal pace and then for the last 30 min (my runs are usually an hour)I will do interval running and they are times I can go .5 of a mile doing 7.5 miles an hour.
There are days when I am filled with energy as well and it feels like I am running from someone but those are the days that I can get outside, in the fresh air. Those are the best runs!

Thanks again,
Lori:)

Lori....it really does depend on your goals. When I was younger I always wanted to do a race faster than the year before. So there were some years that I really pushed and had some awesome times. I was very proud of my PR for a marathon when I was 38, I did a 3:30 which is an 8 min pace! I trained very hard as that was my goal. When I was done I thought..ok..I did it and now I don't have to do that again!!! Trust me, I haven't!! It is very true, to get faster you do have to run faster once or twice a week. Since I have taken up trails and distance running a 10 min pace for me is quite common and even slower sometimes. I will be honest and say I want to get some speed back. I know I am fighting age and most likely perimenopause now so it is really tough. I still love running though and will keep on trucking along. I know it keeps me healthy and active and that is a good feeling to me...:)...Carole

I run a ten minute mile at my VERY best so you sound VERY good to me.
I agree that using the treadmill for speed work is a good way to increase your speed.
