My MAC shopping spree--what to do?

Bunbun

Cathlete
Another shopping spree confession here. I went to MAC today--I needed foundation and have been dying to have someone do my makeup and get some fresh ideas. One of their makeup guys worked with me for probably close to an hour, and I bought a whole bunch of stuff. Problem is, I didn't really like what he did--I kept saying how I like my makeup to look natural, but he really went heavy on all the makeup. I bought a whole bunch of stuff because I felt obligated and also because I thought that I could just apply it with a lighter hand and make it work. (By the way, the BF took one look at me and said I looked like a Kabuki actor.) So now I'm having second thoughts--do I return it all and go elsewhere to see if I can get someone to do something that I like? Do I keep it and make it work for me? It doesn't help that I spent a small fortune--I'm having buyer's remorse.

Yikes, Bunbun! A Kabuki actor! Oh, dear.

I would try it with a lighter hand for a few days and see how you feel about it. If you still don't like it, it may mean the foundation and/or the blush is the wrong shade or texture for you and should be returned.

As for the shadows and eye colorings, did you get basic neutral tones? If so, you should be able to work with them by just using less. But if they gave you sparkly purple, bring it back by all means and tell them it's just not you!

My foundation is called Studio Tech and I think it's a nice creamy foundation. Not too light and not too heavy. My eye shadows are very neutral shades, all in the brown family. My liner and mascara are dark browns. They are all very natural looking.

I think you should try it for a few days and if it still doesn't look natural to you, go back and let them know how you feel. I'm sure they will do whatever is necessary to make you happy with your experience.

A mauvey pink and a taupe eyeshadow, so that's definitely neutral. I already have liner and mascara, so didn't get new stuff from them. Foundation is called moisture blend, and also got some sheer powder. Thinking about it some more, I like the colors. Oh, also, he gave me a lip gloss that only adds a tiny bit of color--not like anything I've used before, and I hate how lipstick tends to look on me, so I'm actually happy with that.

If I was thinking of returning the stuff, I wouldn't open it and use it first, though--I don't think there's anything they could do about it at that point.

Sounds like the only problem might be the foundation and the blush.

Anyway, I wouldn't assume that if you use it you can't return it. Making a new long-term customer in such a competitive market is probably more important to them than the cost of one foundation. Just take the attitude that their job is to make you happy, and you'll be surprised what will follow. :D

Oh Gosh,
Bring it back if you are not happy. I've never returned make-up and I'm not sure you can, but if you don't like it....it is way too expensive to keep! All the make-up in my posted pictures is Mac (the make-up artist's choice (she was 26 yrs old) not mine ;)) .....I can't complain I like the way the pictures came out :) .......I do prefer Laura Mercier's Make-up foundation over Mac any day, but I do think Mac is good and would be my second or third choice next to maybe Bobbi Brown. I think I'm old enough and earned the right to know:p

Nobody beat Laura Mercier for foundation, but nobody beats Mac for eye hightlights....IMO....

if you like the natural look you would probably love the Bare Minerals collection...it is all natural and I love it. I used to be a huge MAC fan until one day I ordered the Bare Minerals foundation from QVC and I was hooked.

I just recently bought some Mineral Veil (an all over face powder that take away shine and evens out skin tone) and Glee powder that gives your face a nice glow (I cant get my face in the sun or I get dark spots)..

I say if you are not happy with it take it back. I think they will allow you to if you have not opened it. My friend took back opened foundation and they said no but she got mad and said she spends a ton of money at MAC and that the makeup person did not get her shade right and they eventually gave in...

good luck!

Hi! I just had a MAC make over and LOVE it. It's quite natural looking but still you can tell I have makeup on. My closest guy friend said he doesn't usually like make up but it looks really good. Even my teenage kids like it alot.

I didn't buy the 3 eye shadows this time and buying it next month. I love the foundation it's very natural looking. When I got it done they put extra eye shadow on for night (which I'm not going to buy

It wasn't that expensive and I bought foundation, powder, blush, lipstick, lip liner.

Robin you looks SO great! What do you do for working out? Are those professional pics?

I would take it all back and explain the issue. You can even bring a small list of what is wrong with the look or maybe what you normally wear.

If you are lucky, he (the guy that originally did it for you) won't be there and you can get someone else to take a fresh look and make a better look for you. If he is there, don't be afraid to request that or maybe ask two or them to take a look for a new idea.

I am sure that they will replace the products that don't work and show you how to use the others in a way that suits your needs. They'd rather you be happy with different products than just throwing the stuff in a closet and never using it again.

I'm a regular customer at Clinique and I've taken things back a couple of times without a problem. I don't like to do it and the sales ladies are not super excited about it, but if you don't like it, I'm pretty sure they have to take it back. Many times, if I'm trying something new and the sales lady of course wants to make a sale, when they see I'm acting wishy washy they will say, of course if you don't like it you can bring it back.

I guess the issue is I'm not sure if I like what I got or not, because he put it on with a really heavy hand and I felt pressured to buy stuff because he spent so much time on me. I've taken makeup back before, with other brands--it's uncomfortable to do, which is funny cause I have no problem returning clothes! I think I may wander over to the MAC store today and see if someone else is working there who can help me decide about this stuff.

For the folks who mentioned Laura Mercier--I've never heard of that brand. Where do you get it, and what is it about it that you love?

You know, Bunbun, I think you're doing the right thing by going back to the store. I don't think you should feel badly about returning the stuff. I was thinking more about the suggestion that you try Bare Escentuals. It is supposed to be made of all natural ingredients. I have to admit I tried it at Sephora and it didn't look very good on me, but so many people really love it, that it might be a good choice for you. The people at Sephora will be happy to give you a Bare Escentuals "makeover" without any obligation to buy.

If I can convince the BF that I'm not being crazy by going and returning everything, that's what I'll do today! He thinks I should keep it all.
