My cousin 200lbs + wants to try Cathe

My cousin is in the 200 pound and up range but she isn't new to exercise. She has exercised and failed at a few things but she wants to stay consistent. Can she do Cathes strength training exercises like Butts & Gutts and other weight workouts. Don't underestimate the weight because she can lift and she wants a challenge . Did any of you workout to Cathes strength training when u were in the 200 pound range club? Thanks.

One of my closest friends is 200+ and is just starting to seriously watch her diet, but she has exercised regularly for years and she does a lot of Cathe's workouts. She has always just tailored them to what works best for her. She may not always lift as heavy as Cathe (but I don't always lift as heavy as Cathe either), but she does the workouts pretty consistently. Her reasoning for me made a lot of sense when she started buying Cathe workouts. She is able to make Cathe's workouts work for her and she has a lot of room to grow with them. She didn't want to spend a ton of money on beginner workouts and then have to continually spend more money to upgrade to more advanced workouts. :)

Keep in mind that the folks on the Biggest Loser are very large, and baby, they REALLY exercise hard! Amazing - the first day they are running up hills!

Ok great..She was a bit intimidated at first thinking only smaller women could do Cathe . Thanks again for the advice.

Yes she does do Cathe's cardio workouts as well. Her new favorites are Cardio Fusion and the cardio premixes on Drill Max and Body Max 2. Again with these workouts she makes them work for her. I've worked out with her a few times and she keeps up pretty well. I was impressed. The best part for her is that these workouts give her a lot of room to grow. She's also just preordered Tracey's Sweatfest workouts and has several of Amy Bento's and Jari Love's workouts as well.

I think as long as she enjoys the workouts and will modify to avoid injury, she should go for it! The best workouts are the ones that keep you coming back. And so many of us have had to work up to Cathe's workouts when they're new!

I weigh around 240 lbs now (265 at my highest weight) have exercised for many years and I can do weights and low impact aerobics. I also do free weights,Jari Love, other kickboxing, and use elliptical or stationary bike. I used to do the Firm but got bored with it and found it too easy. I'm new to Cathe so I don't have many of her tapes (Basic Step/Body Fusion, Low Impact Step, Low Max, Muscle Max). On these tapes the weight work is a little too easy for me and the step is just right. The biggest modifications I make for weight training are that my body weight is plenty for stuff like squats and lunges and I have trouble with pushups I'm just too heavy even on my knees. Everything else I need to add more weight or do more reps so my guess is Cathe's other weight tapes may be better for your cousin than the ones I have are. When I bought these I was mainly interested in the step as I was coming back after needing to drop a lot of weight bearing cardio for a couple of years after an ankle injury that took a long time to heal. I do use just the platform for step aerobics as that gets my heart rate up enough. I also try not to do too many pivoty moves although that has more to do with the bum ankle and my two left feet rather than my weight. These tapes are really good to help figure out Cathe's choreography for me as her step is different than anything I remembered doing pre ankle. My weight does affect my ability to use a treadmill my knees and back will start to hurt after 15 or 20 minutes even just walking but other types of low impact aerobics I'm usually good for an hour. I'll also use the stationary bike more when my ankle is acting up. Hope that helps.

I was 180 at 5-4 when I started Cathe, and did her for years and years and years at that weight. Exercising is all about doing what you can do, and that is the beauty of home exercise. No one there to judge you.

I currently weigh 220,and I'm doing the begginer rotation of cathes.I do have a little trouble with the High impact type moves(like when cathe says too add a hop here) with the step,I just adjust it to my fitness level, but I love doing the resistance bands/tube.I use to weigh 278,and couldn't imagine doing what I do now on the step(probably couldn't).But when I did weigh that, the weight just seem to "melt" off(with a good diet)!!

Tell your friend Good Luck!!

Amy:)

Cathe for Overweight Exercisers

All things are possible! I am 5'3" and have done Cathe’s advanced workouts weighing as much as 230 pounds. I love Cathe’s personality and style and enjoy her workouts. Her step workouts are intense enough for someone who is significantly overweight to get a good workout by using a 4" platform with no risers. Your cousin will likely be able to handle this since she is not new to exercise. If not or if she has weak knees, she can start with a mat as her step and do the workouts on the floor. I recommend buying a rebounder. I use it for the super high impact blasts in IMAX3 and the Kick Max blast challenge. Tuck jumps are a blast on my rebounder. Literally! Push-ups can be modified by doing them on her toes instead of on her knees. She can also skip moves like stability ball pikes and single-arm dips that are too advanced. I am a big believer in making my workouts work for me by modifying up or down. I listen to my body and modify accordingly. I am personally motivated by a challenge, and most of the workouts that are sold in stores never inspired me.

I recommend starting with Low Impact Step, Low Impact Circuit, and Supersets/Push Pull. Low Max is good too, but the choreography might be too complex for her if she is brand new to Cathe’s style.

Please encourage her to join the forums too. This is a very loving and supportive community, and the time I invest here blesses me beyond measure. I would be delighted to start a check-in with her.

Blessings,
Heather B.

Yes. I'm in that "club" and have been doing Cathe's workouts since 2000, and lifting since last year. I have no problems whatsoever and find weight training enjoyable. There are some limitations in that I can't do an on the toes pushup, but that's something a lot of people struggle with, even at a much lighter weight.

I don't see why your cousin couldn't lift and exercise just because of her weight.
