My computer kepypad won't work. Any suggestions?

Merry Christmas everyone! I haven't been able to get on the past few days. The keyboard on my laptap won't work. I can't type anything or navigate with the arrow keys. Nothing particular happened. I was typing, walked away and when I came back, the keys would not work. I can get on to websites and use the mouse but I just can't reply. If anyone has any thoughts on what could be wrong, I'd appreciate your thoughts. I'm at my cousin's right now so at least I could ask this question. Thanks for any help and again, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I had that problem but in my case I'd spilled Diet Coke on my laptop (oops). This was over a year ago and with a computer I'm no longer using, and I ended up just using an external keyboard for a while (plugged in with a USB cable). I hope you don't have to end up doing that because it was a pain. You could try it out for at least a temporary measure if you have a keyboard you could borrow and plug in.

It just sounds like a faulty connection. Just unplug and replug each side of the cable that connects the keyboard to the CPU.
 
Did you try rebooting? Sometimes that's all it needs to do. Do you have a PC or a Mac? This happened to me once with a PC, and when you reboot, before windows loads, try going into the "logistic" stuff (it'll tell you to press one of the function keys), and then, if you have any functionality with the arrow keys, you can go to the "keyboard" tab and make sure that it's on. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have a pc laptop so there's no connecting cables to the CPU. I did re-start it but I will totally shut down and start it again when I get home tomorrow and I'll disconnect and reconnect all wires. I sure hope this helps. I do not have a keyboard to try and attach to it but hopefully disconnecting and reconnecting everything will help. If anyone has any other suggestions, please post them as I will have a hard time finding a computer to get on if mine at home doesn't work since I won't be back at work to use that computer until next week. Thanks again!

Oops, I just realized that I spelled kepypad instead of keypad in my subject line. This is a very different keypad than I'm used to. At least I have something that types. :7

After doing the shutdown, remove the battery and then reinsert it as this will totally reset the computer.

Sounds like a Windows hibernation issue.
 
YEAH, YIPPEE, I'M HERE, I'M HERE!!!!!!!:7 Thanks again to all of you that offered your suggestions. Removing the battery is what got my keyboard to work. Thanks Dave and a big ((((( ))))) to you and everyone! Now life can begin again, phew! :)

Maybe yours has the same thing mine does: mine suddenly stopped accepting keyboard input (except for the mouse pad) while I was typing. It's currently being looked at, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

A week without a home computer is a real bummer! (at least I do have one in the office, but I don't want to come in here unless I have to...like prepping classes today, and starting them ....blech!...Monday!)
 
Is it a MacBook? I have a brand new one and was having this problem where it would lock up for a minute or two. Was pretty bad because it would happen when I was on instant messaging with friends, having some pretty serious conversations and I couldn't respond. So they'd think I was pissed or something. ha ha

There's a software update download on the Apple support website if it's a Mac. I downloaded that the other day and haven't had any problems since.

Ooops! Nevermind. Glad it's fixed.
 
Kathryn, did you remove the battery like Dave suggested because that's what worked for me? Mine is a laptop but am not sure that's what you have.

I just got a new Dell 1720 laptop for Christmas. Beautiful laptop and my first one. All was well until New Year's Eve. That's when the keyboard started locking up. It would lock up to the point that when I'd turn it off and try to get back in, I couldn't type a password to proceed further. I called Dell's support (in India) and was on the phone for about 5 hours (2 different phone calls) going thru different diagnostics to include taking out the battery and replacing it, downloading drivers, they even had me take out the keyboard and reseat it using a couple of screwdrivers. They want to send me a new keyboard but I've reconsidered and want a whole new laptop from them. Wondering if this laptop is a lemon. First problem is the laptop is so new and not even registered in their system yet. This was ordered off of their website on 12/18/07 and they still don't have the info at their service center!!! WTH??? They are telling me it will take another 24-48 hours before it's in the system.

Anyway, sounds like others are having this problem too. It stinks. Good thing I didn't get rid of my old 2001 Compaq with Windows ME on it. That's what I'm using now to be able to respond to posts.
