Muscles hold water

Does anyone know what it means when it is said that muscles hold water? I'm curious because with my bodyfat scale it says that atletes should not use this model because muscles hold a certain amount of water and you wouldn't get an accurate reading. An athlete was anyone who worked out up to or close to 10 hours in a 7 day period. What does that mean?

Your muscles are 70% water (but then so is the rest of your body). I've heard it said that most "home" bodyfat scales are pretty inaccurate & the best way to determine your body fat is to get "water weighed" the way they did on "The Biggest Loser."

What does it mean to workout close to 10 hours a week? Just that, whether you are doing cardio or weight lifting or swimming or dancing. Anything that will get your heartrate up. However, this doesn't mean if you've just started working out approximately 10 hours a week, you are considered an athlete.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I didn't understand if they meant the more muscle you have the more off the scale would be because it's not really designed for people who work out that much? As far as the 10 hours it just confused me a little, I thought athletes probably work out even more than 10 hours a week with all the various things they have to do. They really do sleep, eat, and breathe workouts. Unless they're in a rest mode I suppose. That's why that through me a little. Thanks for the information.
