I read in Muscle Fitness mag that you are much better off to take your shoes off when doing your calf exercises, you get a much broader range of motion, also, that shoes tend to help you up, so if you want a more defined muscle take you shoes off. Also, they had a lateral raise for the shoulders that apparently works them much harder, you hold on to a bar with the non working arm and lean sort of slanted at an angle. They mention that you will have to go lighter than normal when doing the raise from this angle.
