moving...AHHHHHH!

Cathlete
Haven't been on in a while because my DH just got an great job offer in Syracuse,NY over the weekend. (We live in FL)Talk about 2 different worlds. He leaves in 3 weeks, and leaves me here to sell the house:-( I'm just frazzled. Not only do I have to have the house ready to put on the market in the next 2 weeks(and let me tell you we have a lot of crap)I have the kids in school and I've got to do 6 months of school in 2-3 months so I can get my RN license before I go. I'm excited but very nervous. We know no one up there. Our families are all here and PA. I don't know if I'm ready for all that snow yet:eek: That's one of the reasons I moved to FL:) Oh well gotta do what keeps the bills paid! Thanks for listening and if anyone has any tips, especially selling the house quick in a slow market, I'd really appreciate it:D Maybe I should get back to cleaning out the closetsx(

Good luck to you. I'll be doing the same thing in another year. I would suggest clearing out as much clutter as possible. If you can, there are two shows on cable, Sell This House and Designed To Sell which give good tips on selling your house faster.

Oy! What a job you have before you! Good luck and best wishes. I hope you and your family enjoy the new climate.

3 Kids-

I feel for you!

But let me tell you, Syracuse is a great town. We lived there for 14 years and the hospitals are great. I taught Respiratory Care for Upstate Medical Center and rotated through all of the hospitals with my students.

College sports are a pass time for many people in Syracuse (their football program is not very good right now) and it was fun, fun, fun.

Have you decided on a town to live in yet?

Yes the snow season is long, but it is pretty and the snow removal system is excellent.

Keep cleanning out those closets!

Thanks for all the sympathies:-( Judy thanks for chiming in. I'm so glad to hear from people who actually lived there and not realtors and people from DH's company trying to "sell" us the area. We are looking into B'ville and Liverpool. We understand they are good schools. DH will be up there for a few months alone though to scope out the area. Of course the school taxes are really high and putting a damper on the amount of mortgage we can afford. We want a short commute to work for my DH since I won't work until the following school year.(I need to get the kids used to the area first) He will be working at Lockheed Martin in Liverpool. I found some really nice homes there but I need a huge down payment to get the mortgage reasonable. Do you know anything about those areas?
Did you notice I am procrastinating with the closets:+

Having just helped my father sell his house, with 40+ years of stuff in it, in a very slow market, I have a few bits of advice:

1) Declutter more than you think possible. Make the rooms spare and open. Imagine being a potential buyer and walk through the house -- they have to envision themselves in the place, and your junk won't entice them! :) And cleaning out the closets is a GOOD thing, so back to work, missy! :)
2) CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! Think spit-shine on every possible surface. Replace dingy, worn door knobs and window locks with new ones, polish the floors, and repaint anything possible. Groom the lawn and plantings so the house looks like someone takes pride in it.
3) Get an experienced real estate agent who really knows the market. I got recommendations from neighbors and a family friend who is a retired real estate agent. You can expect to pay a bit more commission, but in my case, she earned it by finding a qualified buyer fast.

It was a lot of work for us, but the house sold within a couple of months. The buyer stated that she chose this house over another because everything was so sparkly clean. In a slow market, you gotta do something to stand out!

Since you'll be moving soon, you can pack up stuff and put it in storage -- that way, the house is decluttered AND you've gotten some of your packing for the move done. :p

Good luck with your moving process!

Thanks for the tid bits. We are getting a storage area to empty the house, took down all the photos, trying to make it look like a model home. Thankfully the house is only 4 years old and my DH takes extreme pride in the yard and garden area. When we sell, hopefully quick:7 , we have to move all the stuff back into the garage so the movers will take it. The company is taking care of the whole move, packing and everything. The only thing we do is get on a plane:) They even pay the broker's commission for us. I guess we can't pass that up! I'll post the final pics of the house when it goes up.

O sounds like fun moving!!}( When me and mom moved she said that was one of hte best wrokouts shes gotten (now I just say wait till the new Cathe w/o}( }()

take Care!

I just wanted to send some good vibes your way; I'm in the same boat so I can sympathize. Dh just got orders to move by Nov. The housing right now is awful here too, we are just a little further north. I've done everything to get the house ready-touched up paint, rented a storage unit & decluttered everything, fixed up the yard, the house is sparkling clean and we've not had one person come to look. x( We live in a good neighborhood, our house is only 2 yrs old and we've priced it several thousand dollars less than the other houses for sale in our area. I'm about ready to cry trying to keep the house looking perfect all the time with two small children and a big dog. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm right there with you!

<Good friends are there to bail you out of jail, best friends are sitting next to you in the cell saying, "Damn, that was fun!!!">
I love the quotation Amy! }(

Marsha, I'm sending good vibes to you too! I too have 2 small kids and I remember from selling in the past that it is such a pain keeping the house up. I'm praying that it doesn't take that long but the market is so slow. 2 houses across the street just sold and we live right near the Air Force base with the best schools. I'm hoping we get military transfers in here or something. I know we are going to have to price it really low:-( I think I'm going to pick up the Saint Frances is it? The statue that you bury in the back yard for good luck. I'm about to try anything. My DH only has 60 days temporary housing and I can't afford a mortgage and rent:eek:

I recommend getting a cleaning service. Services like Molly Maid have deep cleaning packages. After you declutter the house and pack up everything you don't need in boxes and put them in a storage building, have the cleaning service clean the daylights out of your house.

We lived in Liverpool for 6 years. It is a lovely community. The school idstrict is very large though. The high school graduating classes were typically 600+ when we wer there. Lockheed Martin is very near the thruway and our old home. I still point it out when we are on the thruway. The town of Salina which is part of the Liverpool School district has these neighborhood pools. You just show them you water bill to verify residence and your kids can get free swim lessons in the summer, and free use ofthe pool all summer long. When I had toddlers, we were at thatpool every day. Plus I met the neighbors there, and found some pretty good sitters.

Other really good school districts to look into are Jamesville Dewitt and Fayettville Manlius. However, they will be about a 20-25" minute commute for your DH.

There are some good private (high) schools. Christian Brothers Acadamy, and Bishop Luden are good, if you want to stay in L'pool and not have your kids in such a big school.

Syracuse has an awesome Mall The Carousel Center at it's finger tips.

If you want advice for moving, get the book Sink Reflections and read the chapter on moving. You can try your local library.
