Movie Snack Alternative

Hey All:

DH and I went to see Munich this afternoon and to my surprise the theatre concession stand had a big sign up advertising "healthy alternatives" such as apple slices and carrots and celery. The apples came with a little container of caramel and the veggies came with a thing of ranch dressing, but both were quite small. What a great idea!

Definitely have to have popcorn with butter. This post almost makes me want to go to the movies just so I can get some of that yummy popcorn!

I sneak in my own popcorn in a baggie. Gotta have the popcorn, just don't what theirs -- although I agree it is fabulous. I usually sneak a bite or two of DS's anyway, but just a bite. Then I eat my own air-popped corn with just a teensy bit of real butter.

I am glad to see they are trying to change but I too will still sneak in my own treats! My kids think that's awful and my daughter always wants to tattle on me! :) I allow them to get thier little kid combo but I won't spend on myself. Susan

Oh yeah, I agree with all the comments! I bring my own popcorn (not crazy about the theatre's stuff) and apples and chocolate.

My post was intended only for the 3 people on the planet who:
- can resist movie popcorn
- only eat healthy
- don't sneak food in at all

:p

Sparrow ~ I must be married to one of the above! :p My dh has got some will power. I always have a few handfuls of the kids. I like the idea of bringing my own popcorn. I'll have to do that next time.

I lived in London, England for seven years. They don't HAVE (or didn't when I lived there) popcorn at the movies. It's just not right, going to the movies and not smelling that wonderful popcorn smell. Needless to say, when I came home, I went a little bit crazy on the popcorn. Now I can't eat much of it because all the salt gives me a massive headache, but I do like a few nice handfuls:)

At our large movie theatres, you can get pizza, Burger King, Taco Bell, fries. Is it the same in the U.S.?

Shelley,

We have a huge multiplex cinema here. They don't have things like Burger King or Taco Bell, but they do have Sbarro pizza and Nathans hotdogs. You can also get funnel cakes, those big soft pretzels, nachos--all kinds of stuff! I like to get soft pretzels with cheese dip.:9 :p

I used to bring my own popcorn, with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast on.

Last time I had movie theater popcorn and pop, I got a bad case of hives later that night (breathing was very hard, and I had to go to the emergency room) so I'll stay away from it!

As for "healthy," maybe "healthiER" would be a better label, as the sauces and dips that come with them don't sound that healthy.

An independant movie house I used to go to (foreign and independant films) had actual healthy foods: air-popped popcorn with nutritional yeast to sprinkle on, juices and flavored waters and teas.

I don't really like popcorn much but I do like to munch on something during a movie. So, I usually bring in a baggie of some yummy cold cereal like cocoa puffs. I love snacking on cereal at home too during a movie.
