Motivation and advice, please

Hi everyone,

I have to say, I'm just feeling a bit down today. No particular reason; maybe I just need a nap. Anyway, the gist is that I have no motivation to do any work today.

So please, give me some motivation and advice for how to get down to the nasty business of editing some more of my thesis (gahhhh!!!). I need a spoon full of sugar, to make this medicine go down........

Thanks!
Sandra

Oh god Sandra--how I hated the (#&%^$&#$& thesis. Plus when you're working on your own schedule it is SO HARD to just knuckle down & do it.

Here's some motivation: the faster you do it the faster it'll be done & you won't have to worry about it anymore, then you can spend ALL your free time working out! :)

LOL!! Good point, Maximus! I guess it's really not like mold, where lots of dark light and neglect will make it grow.

What was your subject-area?

Sandra

My BA was the history & politics of the second amendment. My MA was the effects of Algernon Sidney (17th c. British Enlightenment philosopher) on the Founding Fathers & subsequent American Revolution.

Great bedtime reading. :+

What are you doing? Something someone might actually read I hope. ;-)

Ooohh, your field is US History, I take it? You 'Merkins sure like your history :) Canadians don't seem to be half as enthralled with our history as Americans. I have no idea why, because we have had some interesting events. Like that time we kicked out the Yankees who were trying to invade us LOL!

My area is Sociology, in particular work, industry, labour, unions, and politics. My MA thesis was a case study of a certification drive by university professors. My PhD thesis is researching the ramifications of government organizational restructuring for the public sector unions that represent the workers in those organizations. I used to find it a very interesting topic, but I've been working on it for so long that I just can't stand it anymore. I've come to far to quit, but boy the thought crosses my mind daily.

Thanks for chatting.

Hi Sandra,

Just passing this along. In his book, YOUR BODY'S MANY CRIES FOR WATER, F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., explains how stress creates dehydration and how dehydration creates stress -- it's a vicious circle once you're in it. The remedy is simple and inexpensive (water), but water drunk at particular times of the day, etc. This very much may help. It has for me.;-) I work under deadlines constantly -- I'm an author -- and so this is an important point for me.:)

Hey Sandra! How about, for every 30 mins you work on your thesis, you get to check the forum, and don't check it unless you have worked on your thesis. Back when i had crap to write, i had to give myself timed rewards or i would never be motivated to do it. do you have a deadline for this monster? do you just get to finish it whenever? how much more do you have to go? have you tried taking 3 or 4 days off from it? i do that with tedious tasks and then when i pick it up again, it's not so boring. Just a thought.

or there is always the BC apporach of motivation....GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND FINISH YOUR WORK!!!! i never liked that approach personally. I say take a maternity leave!!! }(

Holy crap Sandra, do we need to talk! The unions are the bain of my existence! I swear to god the whole thing is like communism. There is absolutely no incentive to work hard when you know you're gonna get the same raise as the person sitting next to you. Boy could I tell you some stories!

Don't quit--you've come so far! Soon you'll be Dr. Sandra, how cool will that be?

And yes we do love our history. Are you in Great Britain? Because we love your history too. It is kind of ours after all. :)
