morton neuromas

Has anyone ever dealt with a morton neuroma and what did you do to help the pain without surgery? I can hardly do step aerobics because of the pain.
Thanks!!

My understanding is that surgery is a last resort. I have had mine injected with steroid twice. It gives me a lot of relief. Some workouts will still aggravate it though :( You want to wear shoes with a wide toe box. Nothing narrow. Also orthopedic inserts can be helpful. The next step for me is sclerosing therapy. That's a series of 6 injections that will deaden the nerve.

Neuroma

I lived with having a Neuroma for 10 years. It was extremely painful to do step aerobics, line dancing, walking, etc.

I finally decided to have surgery after 10 years of living with it and it was the best thing I did!! No more pain. I had it done on a Dec. 31 and took the month of January off and then resumed my activities as normal without pain!

I highly recommend the surgery. It's quick & easy. And I've been pain-free for the last 11 years! :)

How long of a recoup was it? Could I go back to work in a week? Any orthodics that would work?
Thanks for your help

What has made a huge difference for me was switching to wearing Keen shoes. These are wider shoes, and luckily for me I can wear them to work (I'm a preschool teacher so I dress very, very casually.) I had orthodics made, but they did nothing for me. Superfeet.com has inserts that feel ok (not specifically for MN, but I got the pink ones and liked them), but honestly, I don't need them now that I exclusively wear Keens.

Workout shoes have been more of an issue, but with my everyday shoes having made such a difference, I'm fine wearing Ryka's to work out in for an hour a day.

I've also iced the area when I've had flare ups of the neuroma, but I haven't had to do that in 3 years (since I switched to Keens.)

Good luck!

keen shoes

Thanks for the tip. I have not heard of keen shoes but will look them up online. I will also try Ryka's. I am desparate!!! I really dont want to have surgery so I am willing to try anything before that. I have recently lost 30 lbs. and have started back my Cathe dvds and my foot started to hurt. Go figure!!!
Have a good one and thanks again for the tip!!
