More questions from the under educated one

I am so confused. I work out to a Cathe DVD every day (or 5-6 days/week) PLUS, do my elliptical for 30 minutes. Usually one week it is all her new videos and then 1 week is the Gym Style workouts. Is this wrong?? I've read that you shouldn't work out on a step more than 2 days/week and you shouldn't weight train back to back days.
I am FAR from the weight I would like to be and I think the more I work out the better/quicker results but this isn't working either. Am I doing this way wrong??? I don't have any "real" goals as far as building muscle or anything, just the simple look better. I know eating better is #1 and I am very uneducated in that category too. But beings I've done all these workouts a hundred times is it doing me any good any more??

You might want to check out Cathe's rotations on this forum. She posts a new one each month. Also, in the rotation part of the forum Fitnessfreak366 comes up with some amazing rotations. I think people have seen some great results with these rotations.

I've heard not to do step more than 3 times in a week and not to do it on consecutive days. However I did step 3 times a week for a while and my knees really suffered. I have always had problem knees though and now I can't even use a step at all, I do the step workouts on the floor. I think it depends on what your body can tolerate, but I would definitely recommend not doing step on consecutive days.

As far as weight training on back to back days, you want to be sure to not work the same body part back to back. You should give every muscle group at least 48 hours rest in between working. More if you still have DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). I also make sure I seperate muscle groups that act as accessory muscles. For instance if I work chest, I don't work chest or triceps the next day since the triceps are accessory muscles to the chest.

In my opinion the way you eat is going to play the most important role in losing weight. It can be very confusing. Have you thought of joining something like weight watchers? They have so much information to offer for losing weight. I find it to be much easier than trying to lose weight completely on my own. I don't know your eating habits, but if you need to make a lot of changes I find it easiest to make one or two changes at a time rather than trying to change everything you do at once. You can set yourself up for failure by taking on too much at once. When I first started WW, I began by just eating less. Then gradually I changed to healthier eating habits such as eating more fruits and vegetables. I'm still always trying to improve the way I eat, such as less processed foods, more whole grains, etc. You will also find a lot of nurtitional info and advice on these forums. It sounds like your off to a great start though with all the working out that you're doing. Another poster mentioned trying the rotations forum and I agree, that will give you some structure for your workouts. Good luck to you!
