Can anyone recommend a book that will help me to lose weight?
I need to understand this whole carb business. I don't want anything to radical (no Atkins type diet) and I want to lose about 1 or 2 lbs per week. Would "body for life" be a good choice? Somercize? Please help.

Sorry, I messed up on my post. I was also gonna ask if anyone could recommend some more videos that have hi/lo floor aerobics.
I love the style of MIC hi/lo and 10-10-10 hi/lo. I simply need more hi/lo videos to choose from for my workout library. I was gonna try hi/lo heaven, but that sounds too complex for me (choreography wise). Can anyone recommend a not-too-complex hi/lo video with good, energizing music?
Thanks,
Lisa

Stay away from any books advocating a specific diet if your aim is to educate yourself on nutrition so you can make informed choices. Body for Life is a specific plan that is similar to Atkins in being high protein and low-carb.

Two wonderful authors to look for are Jane Brody and Nancy Clarke. They both have some really informative books out there that really teach you exactly what a protein, carb or fat is, what it does within the body and how to balance your intake of them all accordingly.

A favorite book of mine, which will seem intimidating when you see how big it is but that will be a lifelong resource for nutrition, is "Staying Healthy With Nutrition" by Dr. Elson Haas. It covers everything from proteins, fats and carbs, to vitamins, minerals, supplements and everything in between. You can read the sections on carbs, etc and I promise you will often grab the book to look up other things all the time. It's well written and completely exhaustive in terms of info and doesn't push towards any specific diet, just gives you the info you need to make your own choices the right way. It's the kind of book that functions as a nutrition bible for professionals and regular folk like you and me. It won't become outdated, the information is sure and sound, and everyone in the house can benefit from it over the years. It's a great investment in lifelong health.

Take care!

I am terrible at choreography and the hi/lo videos that I like are CIA 9905 and CIA 9803. Also, Christi's Happy Hour is a lot of fun. I don't have hi/lo heaven yet, but I am going to give it a try. 9905 also has a step section, but I haven't been able to learn it. The hi/lo is a lot of fun, though and pretty intense.

Body for Life

I wanted to clarify something LEX411 said about Body for Life. She said that it was a specific plan like Atkins (which I agree with) but want to make sure that people know it is NOT Atkins. I frequently see Body for Life grouped with Atkins and it irritates me because I would never consider doing Atkins but my husband and I have been following the Body for Life plan for over a year now with good results. Anyway, as an FYI, the Body for Life diet is a balanced protein/carb and low fat diet whereas Atkins is high protein, low carb and high fat diet. Body for Life is not for everyone because it is hard to stick to a specific plan, any plan, I believe in the long run. Body for Life, however, helped me realize how out of balance my protein/carb ratio was and helped my energy levels enormously. (I was a carbohydrate addict before and was always tired and hungry). I've modified the plan to add extra carbs when I feel low in energy which makes the plan easier to live with and keeps the same general philosophy of BFL. I think the trick is finding what works for you :)

RE: Body for Life

Sorry if I offended you. When I looked at the meal plans for Body For Life, investigating it for myself and my husband, it seemed to me to be high protein, low carb. I'm against that kind of diet myself, and that is why I compared it to Atkins. I do think Atkins is much much worse, because the idiot actually advocates eating some of the worst crap, and I can't believe that just because it does make your body drop weight that so many people have followed him. I know 3 people personally whose cholesterol levels SKYROCKETED on that plan, 2 of them (not related or anything) ended up in the hospital with dehydration and stomach pains. So THAT'S the "diet" I like to warn people against.

Body for Life looked like a much healthier way of eating, with lots of smaller meals (which I love), good lean protein and lots of greens. But for myself, I find too much protein to be a bad source of fuel for my body. It is all very personal, and I'm not saying it doesn't work for anybody. But my impression was that she wanted to learn about nutrition in general, i.e., what is a carb and what does it do, so I recommended other sources.

I'm glad you've had success with Body for Life. I'm sure lots of people do. Just not my cup of tea and not something I would put clients on myself. But I appreciate your input, I do always like to learn more about the various diet plans out there from actual users.

Take care.

RE: Body for Life

Hi Lex411,
I really think your advice is sound. I think Jane Brody is an excellent source for nutritional information.
I have some problems with diets that advocate "this is the only way to lose weight" or ones that push supplements. I definitely agree that the Adkins diet is the worst of the bunch. I am sure Body for Life is better, but long term it does not seem really doable.
Just my two cents.

RE: Body for Life

No offense taken. I just didn't want someone to read about Body for Life being like Atkins and have that stick in the back of their mind possibly discouraging themselves or someone they know further down the road.

I wish I knew more about nutrition although to be quite honest, the more I read the more confused I become!;-) Seriously, I've learned a lot about nutrition and fitness over the past year and continue to be educated through this forum. I look forward to checking out new posts every day.

Hi Lex,
Thanks for the response. I looked on www.booksvariety.com and found "Staying Healthy with Nutrition" for $29.22. Sounds like it's worth the money. I'm either gonna order it next week or order one of the Jane Brody books. Thanks for the advice.
I'm very confused about the whole carbohydrate thing. I have been scrutinizing my diet and it appears that I am consuming far too many carbs and extremely small amounts of protein (this is simply the way I learned to eat as a kid and I guess old habits die hard). I have been trying to find ways to add protein to my diet. Do you consider a scrambled egg sandwich on whole wheat a healthy breakfast choice? I've been confused about the numerous opinions on eggs also. I'm very similar to the other lady who posted (shakeubooty) who said that the more she reads the more confused she gets. I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE TO THAT!!
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hi Lisa,
I can't think of too many good Hi/Low aerobic tapes. But that's not my favorite sytle of workout. I can however recommend Cathe's Cardio Kicks. If you like the kickbox section of her 10.10.10, you'll love Cardio Kicks. No equipement is needed either.

I dont know anything about Christy Taylor's hi/lo heaven, but I've done Karen Voight's Power Packed Workout and it's pretty good.

Enjoy,

Stacy
