Moms: Sore throat/fever?

Bunbun

Cathlete
Thought I'd ask all you moms out there about this, since you probably have a lot of experience figuring this stuff out when your kids are sick. (As opposed to me--I always panic.) At what point do you call the doctor for a fever? I've had this really strange virus for two days now--stuffed nose, postnasal drip, mild sore throat, really tired. Stayed home, didn't exercise, thought the thing was going away, then last night suddenly got a fever and my throat hurt worse. Throat still hurts this a.m., but so far the fever hasn't appeared. I'm stumped--do I go spend the money at the dr, on the chance that it might be strep? It's such a strange sickness. And (whine whine whine) why don't I get just plain old sneezing colds anymore?!

TIA!!
Bunbun the Sick!

How much does your throat hurt? If you've ever had strep, it feels like someone is dragging sharp knives down your throat every time you swallow. Does it hurt that much? If not, I would probably leave it for another day.

Yup, had strep probably 20 years ago, and I remember that it hurt a lot. This thing started hurting like that yesterday, then went back to just a normal hurts to swallow thing. I guess if the fever doesn't come back today, I won't go to the dr. So far it's been 6.5 hrs since my last Tylenol.

I usually give a cold a week before deciding to go to the doc. However, if you are absolutely miserable, going and getting some meds will help you kick it faster. It all depends exactly what kind of thing you've got going on though. Do you think it could be strep or perhaps sinusitis?

<<Do you think it could be strep or perhaps sinusitis?>>

That's what I'm worried about. I've hardly sneezed at all, though I'm definitely sick and I had a fever all last night. I don't usually get a fever when I have just a cold.

Bunbun,

I'm sorry you're not well. I am just finishing up meds for strep, as is one of my DS, and Shelley described my throat pain beautifully.

However, my DS cried with a sore throat for one night and one day, spiked a high fever one night and had no more fever and then barely complained of throat pain. He did, however, feel just overall lousy and I took the both of us to the doc. He felt differently from me, but we both had strep. Each of my children present differently with the same illness.

Bottom line, it's hard for one of us to tell you to go to the doc or not, as illness can present differently in each of us. As a parent I can say you learn to "read" your children and just know when to or not to call the good ol' doc.

Now that I've been absolutely no help, I do hope you feel better soon.:)

You would think that after nearly 47 years, I would have learned to "read" myself!!! x(

No such luck, though. I can only say that I'm glad I'm not a parent--I think I would be a nervous wreck.

Lol, no problem, and thanks. Am wavering between calling the doc or not. Still no fever, but the throat hurts more and more.
