Moderately clean eating 3-21

SRP

Hi, everyone!

WHY does clean, healthy eating have to be so darned expensive???? I spent most of my time in the fresh produce section and tried to by organic as well. Ladies, I just about passed out at the cash register. I definitely need to make some adjustments. Not sure where, since both organic and fresh are kind of important to me now. But I'm going to have to sacrifice something. Do you know how cheaply I could eat if I bought boxed mac and cheese and ramen noodles? Gross.

Well, today I will enjoy the expensive stuff in my fridge.

B - steel cut oats with walnuts; banana; soy milk
S - grapes, and possibly yogurt
L - big green salad with beans
S - maybe nuts and fruit, if needed
D - lots of veggies - red pepper, zuchinni, baby spinach, etc. Maybe a stir fry. I'm tired of beans, so I think with some sort of grain. Millet?

Shannon I know EXACTLY how you feel. I posted yesterday that my diet will be pretty much fruit/veggie free until we can get groceries. And not to be a whiner but payroll just told me that she has to take out an additional $115 out of my pay until the end of June. NOBODY told me that I was going to have to catch up on my union dues and health insurance costs while I was on maternity leave. Anyway, enough of my pity party!!!

B: lite english muffin, cherry preserves, coffee
S: low-fat graham crackers, peanut butter
L: 1/2c. ground venision, lettuce, salsa, 2 types of beans
D: pork chop, 1/2 cup noodles, brusselsprouts, tomatoes

Workout for today will be 3.5 mile walk and Cardio & Weights.

Have a healthy day all! :)

Shannon-
Just remember that a little extra investment at the grocery store can save you on health care costs down the road! My thought is that good produce is always a bargin. Just don't let it spoil. :)

The current challenge here is making a dinner for the family that doesn't take long but fits into my plan, keeps DD happy with no meat, and keeps the DH & DS satisfied with some meat. So far whole wheat pasta fits well but we don't want it every night.

PS- I have my legumes most days at lunch because they are not big on beans every day.

ETA- I am not trying to be insensitive to higher costs here . I 'm just trying to look at it in a positive lght. And if the junk food is not in the cart, it will help off set the cost of the fresh food.

My big question for the day is: why is food that basically comes straight from the field so much more expensive than the stuff that has been chopped up, boiled down, stripped of nutrients and then infused with other stuff? You'd think all the work they put into the boxed items would make them completely unaffordable.

Just one of my little pet peeves.

We are lucky to have a new store called "Sprouts" which is basically a farmer's market. The price on their specials are great. The organic is of course a little more expensive, but I can always find enough on sale to stock up the fridge.

Today for me will be:

B - mixed cereal (kashi go lean & fiber one) and lf milk
L - Bean & cheese burrito and an orange
S - rice cake with natural PB & carrots
D - fish and steamed veggies

I followed my plan yesterday. Yeah!

Today I walked/jogged for 45 minutes, approximately 3 miles.
So far my back feels fine! I am so happy about that.

enjoy the day ladies.

Paula

Shannon I don't have an answer to your question. Boggles my mind too. My friend and I were talking about that the other day. You could buy 3 boxes of Little Debbies for what you pay for one small container of strawberries!

I"m looking forward to the summer. I"m planning on planting a small garden this year and we live in an area where there are lots of amish and you cannot beat their prices for veggies. And if there is something you want and they are all out of it at the stand, they will go right into the field and pick it for you. They have done that for me when I wanted corn and red beets.

Good day all. I know what you mean about prices. Especially if something is out of season locally. But.as the commercial says, I'm worth it!
B - fresh fruit salad ($$), homemade oatmeal bread toasted w/PB&J
l - PB&J on whole wheat, carrots, orange
D - Porkloin, some kind of rice, some kind of veggie
S - banana w/ PB

Scanning above, looks like I'm on the PB diet today. I'm not sure about today's workout. I've been dealing with a sore throat and runny nose for the last 3 days, and cardio just doesn't appeal. Maybe L&G.

Hey chiquitas!

Yesterday was okay for me. I snacked a bit while making dinner, but it was just some WW crackers and carrots.

Today:

B - steel cut oats, banana, soy milk
S - WW English muffin with pb
L - leftover veg chili, V8, lf yogurt
S - grapes and 12 grain crackers with lf cheese
D - SO is home today, so he'll probably cook something

Workout is cardio and core, but I'm not sure what cardio yet.

Hello everyone is Catheland,

Well eating was good yesterday even when my evil DH made cookies right infront of me and I walked away! yeah! One small step for woman one giant leap for my behind! haha!

I feel the pain with trying to afford clean eating. I feel like I need to take out a loan to even shop at Wholefoods. Not only that but if you try to eat something quick that is healthy you can forget it here in my town. Nothing fast is good, you can't even find salads at McDonald's anymore. It's crazy.

Here goes the plan for today:
B- Old fash oatmeal w/banana
S- Protein shake
L- Lean cusine spinach and mush pizza w/ small salad
S- Orange and 12 grain crackers
D- Grilled Chicken, green beans, salad and 1/4 c brown rice

Today's workout is LowMax and core. Have major DOMS from GS legs and KPC from yesterday...can we say ouch!

Have a great day everyone!

Hi girls. :)

As far as buying organic goes...yes, it is very expensive. Also, in my part of the world (midwest) you don't find that much in the produce section that IS organically grown except in the summer months. So...I only spend the extra $$$ on organic for produce that truly does benefit my health. In otherwords, most produce can be washed so I don't buy organic bananas when they are more expensive than non. I don't buy organic oranges, although they rarely appear in our stores anyway. The things I will spend the extra dollars on are organically grown strawberries, blueberries, cauliflower, ect. I focus more on which plants will actually absorb the chemicals applied to them and which ones will merely be surface coated so they can be washed or you remove the peel anyway before you eat the fruit.

Also, don't forget about using frozen fruits/vegetables too. Studies have reported that these frozen items do retain the nutrients as well as...if not better than...the fresh alternatives in your market because the fresh items may have spent a week traveling to your area so they have begun to lose some nutritive value in shipping/storage. Now of course, for those of you living in mild climates your produce is probably always fresh...those of us in cold climates are at the mercy of what is available to the grocer and it's all being shipped in.

B=2 slices ww toast with peanut butter, pear, tea.
L=left over slice of pork roast and salad.
D=not sure, kids school activities tonight so dinner hasn't been planned out yet...probably be spaghetti with a side vegetable.

Workout today...Bootcamp.

Fresh fruits and veggies are so pricey because they have to be shipped with care (as compared to a can) and the stores have to toss the rotten ones (whereas Little Debbies could remain "fresh" well into the next decade). Honestly the best option to keep costs doen is to start a garden! Gee, if only I didn't live in an apartment in the middle of the city.
