Modem connection - need help

Winter

Cathlete
HI all computer experts,

I have a laptop from work and I set the dial up number for my home. I can dial up and get on the internet but sometimes it just disconnects. No warning no nothing. I try to go to another site and by dial up pops up because it has disconnected.

Any tips where to look to fix this annoying problem. I am assuming I need to set something somewhere??

Thanks in advance,
Winter

Rainy and really cold here in northern MN!! Snow this weekend.

because you are using dial up, it could be that someone is trying to call you. this will typically disconnect you. i would recommend either getting a second phone line put in, or getting dsl, that way you can surf the net all you want and it won't interfere with your phone line :)

The recommendation of the second line or dsl is a good one but if you can't swing it here are some other things to try.

Shut off call waiting, your local phone book will tell you how.

Does the modem disconnect if you're at work or just at home?

You can try a new phone cord (pc to wall socket.)

Try a different wall socket.

Try the connection from the universal service jack in your house.

If you are getting disconnects at the universal service jack then call the phone company. If you don't get them at the universal service jack but you do elsewhere in your house then it's your home telephone wiring.

Reseat the modem card if you have the problem at home and at work.
