MIS/Push-Up Bars & Wrist Pain

Hi. I'm new this forum and so far have found it very helpful. I just tried out one of my new Cathe tapes (MIS). I saw that they used these push-up bar things to do push ups. I have been using the Firm tapes for a few years now, but have never been able to complete all the push ups because it hurts my wrists. I did try doing the push ups on my bar bells, and while that helped somewhat I still have pain in my wrists and still can only do about 8 total push ups (because of my wrists). I have heard that the push up bars help with this problem.

Does anyone know where to get these push up bars?
Thanks.

Push-up Bar Sources

I received push-up bars for Christmas. You can find them in sporting goods and fitness stores. I also see them in Target stores. While they help with wrist strain, I find them more difficult to use. Since your postion starts 2-3 inches higher off the floor, it's harder for me to get my chest as close to the floor. Good Luck.

Push-up bars

Thanks for the information. I guess I have not looked hard enough for these bars. It just seems like I have never seen them anywhere.

By the way, I have only used MIS (I just got it) one time but doesn't Cathe tell you not to go below the bars when you use them? I have this tape scheduled for Monday so I'll see for sure then.

Thanks again.

Wrist pain

Hi,

I also experience wrist pain, but only in my right wrist (I have carpel-tunnel syndrome). I've found that the best thing for me is to do the pushups on my knuckles (curled fist).

It sounds difficult, but because it's only one hand, I have no problem. I was told to keep my wrist as straight as possible and this seems to do the trick. It may be more difficult for you if BOTH of your wrists hurt.

another wrist pain sufferer

I had such sever tendinitis - over a decade ago! - there were days I couldn't lift my coffee cup without pain. While it it considerably better now, I still suffer through flare ups and am going through a particularly bad one now.

Doing bench presses aggravates it and pushups are out of the question, although I may try the knuckle method you mentioned.

Is there any kind of exercise one can do to strengthen the wrist and forearm and alleviate this problem? I use to squeeze a rubber ball, but it didn't seem to do much to help.

push-ups

Cindy, You say you've tried doing push-ups using a barbell? Did you mean dumbbells? IF not, then you might want to try that. I have carpal tunnel, and usually do pushups by splaying my fingers, bending them back at the first joint while keeping my wrists straight. The weight is (to better visualize this, put your hands flat on a table, spread your fingers as wide as they will comfortably go, then lift your elbows while keeping your wrist straight). Whether this is comfortable for you or not will depend on your flexibility. Another choice (which I often prefer) is to substitute lying chest presses for push-ups (I prefer them because I feel I can control the movement better, and because there is less pressure on the wrists). You might also want to get a wrist support (an Ace bandage type that velcros around you wrist) just to give your wrists a bit of added support when doing this particular exercise.
