HI! I just got MIS, haven't done weights in a LONG time and only have 3, 5, 8, 10lb dumbbells. Do I have to have a barbell for this tape or is there a way to do it with dumbbells...feeling a bit clueless! Thanks, Chris
Cathe and her crew use a barbell in MIS, but you can easily modify most of the exercises with dumbbells. The ones you have should be fine. However, beware...you may find yourself liking MIS so much (for lots of us it's a love/hate relationship--LOL!) that you end up adding a barbell to your fitness equipment collection fairly soon!
Hi Kristin,
Thanks for posting! For some of the lifts, I think I could figure out how to modify for dumbbells, like for bicep curls or something like that, but what about the legs? I'm SO new to this I feel like I need very specific instructions, if you and anyone else would not mind walking me through how to modify. Thanks!! Chris
I haven't done the lower body part of MIS for awhile (I have an injury that's preventing me from doing standing leg work right now), but I'll try to remember. From what I remember, there are LOTS of killer squats, lunges, lunges off the step, plie squats, and probably other stuff, because I know the lower body section gets to me every time!
Since you're a relative newbie, you would probably get a great leg workout at first using no weights at all. As you become more comfortable with the workout, you could add weight. Most of the exercises would work really well by holding a set of dumbbells at your sides, or by resting them on your shoulders. Hope this helps!
I'm not Kristen, but I'll try to answer your question.
When doing the leg work where Cathe uses the barbell you can either hold your dumbbells in your hands at your sides or with your elbows slightly bent. Or you can rest your dumbbells front to back on your shoulders, holding onto one end to keep them from rolling off. This will work for all the lower body work.
Good luck with MIS. It's TOUGH tape!

I did MIS last night...what a hoot! My dh tried to do it with me! I've been doing Step Jam for a few weeks now and I guess that really helped my endurance. He hasn't really exercised in I don't know how long and quit pretty quickly. I kept telling him to try it without the dumbbells. His legs are still feeling like jelly today. I'm a bit sore (I used 3 lb dumbbells for my first time!). I wimped out on the ab section! Guess I found my major weak area! Thanks again for the modifications! Chris
What a workout! Except for wimping out about a minute into the abs section, I think I did pretty well for my first time. Can't wait to do it again tomorrow!! Thanks again! chris
