MIS and plie squats

Hi, this is Christi Martin again. I have only posted a few times, but am just now becoming a Cathe addict. I did the legs and buns portion of MIS for the first time yesterday using a 30 lb barbell. When it came time to do the plie (I don't know if I am spelling that right) squats she held the barbell in the front with a close together grip and elbows out. I did okay for awhile, but had to quit when my ARMS got to tired. (Not my legs as should have been the case) I was wondering what the advantage is to holding the barbell in the front versus on my neck and shoulders as we do with regular squats.

Hi Christi,

I'm not Cathe, and I can't explain the benefits/difference between holding the barbell in front of you vs. across your shoulders, but I can tell you that in some of Cathe's other strength videos, she'll tell you if that's not a comfortable move for you, then use one that's more comfortable.
I use heavier weight for squats and plie squats, usually 50#+ so I always put the barbell across my shoulders, it's just too much weight for me to hold in front of my body and concentrate properly on form.
So I would say use a hold that works for you and allows you to maintain good form.

You could also hold a larger dumbbell in front (as in Slow & Heavy - the photo shown on the main Cathe page).

I'm not familiar with MIS, but in PS Cathe specifically says that if you're not comfortable holding the barbell in front, you can hold it on the back of your shoulders. And I think that Pat, who is one of the exercisers behind Cathe, actually holds it that way to show it as an option.
 
Thank you for all the advice. I held it on my shoulders the last few times I did it and that was MUCH better.
