Mid workout jitters

Hey all, does anyone have this problem? I will get half way through my workout and start getting the shakes and feeling weak in the knees. It really makes me mad because I can't put my all into the workout....loss of strength, energy and focus. I'm just curious as to what I can eat, that's light, pre-workout that will get me through it. I didn't used to be this way. So I'm not sure why it's happening now.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Oh, just some info., I workout about 1 1/2 to 2 hours after getting up in the morning.

TIA for any input you all have to offer.

Sally

This happens to me sometimes while I'm lifting--not so much during cardio.

Mostly I write it off to pushing myself really hard. Like, in the middle of my leg routine my legs'll start quivering & quaking.

However, there have been times when I got all jittery for a couple reasons: 1) b/c I didn't eat right that day. I do a low carb diet but I do try to take in some carbs before I lift. If I don't I feel weak & wobbly; 2) too much caffiene will do this to me. I'm pretty hyper & typically don't have caffiene after maybe 10 am. But sometimes if I go out to lunch I'll have a diet Coke (why is it that no restaurants serve diet Sprites?) & it'll make me kind of jittery.

Could be from several things, including:
Dehydration (make sure to drink enough water before and during exercise)
Low blood sugar (make sure to eat enough carbohydrates, and to eat about an hour before working out, but more importantly, be sure to fuel with enough carbs the day before your workout, so you have glycogen stores available)

Think back at what you are doing differntly now than when you didn't feel this way. If you can't think of anything, maybe a trip to the doctor would be a good idea, to get a complete blood panel, and check for things like diabetes.

Thanks for the quick response Laura.

I do drink the half caff. coffee in the morning when I get up. I guess I never really attributed that to the problem because I don't feel jittery on my day off. But who knows, maybe that is the culprit. It doesn't matter if it's lifting or cardio, it happens with both for me. I just can't wrap my brain around trying to eat breakfast before my workout when I get up anywhere from 5:00 to 6:00a.m.. I have tried a banana pre, but that just made it worse. Maybe I need to cut the coffee back to one cup rather than 2 before hand(they're 16 oz. cups ;-)).

P.S. BTW, I got a kick out of your "embarassing" and "cottage cheese" posts(sooorrry). It was your description that got me.......you're a hoot, lol.

Thanks again, Sally

Kathryn, I know I don't drink enough water. I am trying to do better, but drinking it in the morning just turns my stomach. I do drink during my workouts, sips of course. I guess I need to play around some more with what to eat before hand, but it's very frustrating.

I did just have a physical last November(my yearly) and everything came back fine. He checks for diabetes since two family members have (my sister)and have had (my uncle, who has since passed away)it.

I have tried to think what is different and the only thing I can think of is I used to workout shortly after getting up rather than waiting. Other than that I'm not sure. I'll dig a little deeper though.

Thank you for your input, I'll try the carb thing. Healthy and complex, of course.

Sally :)
