Microwave Sweet Potatoes

Does anyone know how to do this or is it even possible have a "good" sweet potatoe from the microwave?

I want to know how long to microwave it and any special techniques that will keep the skin moist...if that's even possible.

I love sweet potatoes and sometimes I just don't have the time to bake them in the oven.

Anything you can provide would be very helpful.

Thanks!

I do this every day. I have a steamer by Pampered Chef, I put a little water in it, I have a strainer type thing that fits right in the steamer, I put the potatoe in the strainer and cover it with the lid. I microwave a 6 oz. potatoe for 4 minutes, flip it over and cook another 4 minutes. Comes out PERFECT! I love them and have them every evening with my meal. If the potatoes are larger, I'll do 5 minutes a side.

Sorry, Marietta. Maybe it's just me but I've never been able to nuke a good sweet spud! What I usually do is toss a few in the oven when I wake up and by the time I'm about to leave for work, they're done. Then I pop them in the fridge to enjoy at a later date and time. (350 degrees for 1 hour.) They last in the fridge for a couple days and taste fine if you microwave them for 1 1/2 minutes.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear but hopefully it helps a bit.

I microwaved a sweet potato just last night. I just stabbed it a few times with a knife (great for a stress reliever) and then wrapped it in a damp paper towel and stuck it in the microwave for 8 minutes. It came out great! I usually put Country Crock cinnamon butter on it....mmmmmmmm.....I had that and a strawberry/banana/mango smoothie last night. Pure heaven!

Looks like I'm going to have to reevaluate my microwaving techniques! You people are regular Julia Childs (Julia Children???)

I knew I came to the right place to ask this question...so I appreciate your input...all of which I can use.

Lunacat...I do wake up early enough that I could cook them in the morning before I go to work.

Debbie...If I can find some Pampered Chef someplace, that sounds like a plan,

Angie...I can see how the damp paper towel would help. That I can try in the meantime.

Thanks again...you guys rock!!

6 minutes a side? Isn't it mush by then? Mine usually only take about 4-5 minutes total. Maybe I buy small ones or something?

Have you tried the microwave-ready sweet potatoes? (Under various brand names such as "Express Bake PotatOH!") They come wrapped in plastic and have an little instruction label on them - you literally just put the thing in the microwave (with plastic on) and nuke it for 6 minutes (I like to turn it over halfway through) and it's good to go. You don't have to poke holes in it, or anything. They are prewashed too.

My grocery store reeled me in with those and now they don't have them anymore! So, I'm back to the regular sweet potatoe in the microwave. All I do on my microwave is select "baked potatoes" and "start" and they come out perfect everytime.

Angie, you made have a good laugh with the stabbing and stress reliever, aren't we all stressed out? I ate a sweat potatoe today, I like to bake it or steam it, sometimes I do chips, cut them very thin, lots of patientce in there, and then put them in the oven, 350 degrees, no need for seasoning, they are good with nothing, my problem is portions, I can eat the whole sweat potatoe, and that is not good, they are darn good.

I zap sweet potatos in the microwave (5-6 minutes, depending on size), then wrap them in aluminum foil to steam them a bit. I don't eat the skin, though, because I find the skin of sweet potatoes to be a bit too covered with odd bumps and things).

I thought I didn't like sweet potatoes because the only way I ever had them served to me was those gross Thanksgiving ones covered in sugary syrup.

Knowing how good they are for you I wanted to give a healthier version a try. So I wrapped it in foil and baked it in the oven. It was quite tasty sprinkled with cinnamon and splenda. However, there where these stringy, tough things that were disgusting.

I'm wondering if this is normal for sweet potatoes or if it was part of the skin, which I ate. Or was it just a bad potatoe?

Sweet potatos can be a bit stringy. If it's really "tough and stringy," I'd say it's an old potato, or maybe too big.

I like to slice them into thin slices (like a potato chip) and then broil them in the oven. Then I sprinkle some seasoning of choice. That's the only way I've been able to successfully make one. I usually peel them before I slice them though because I don't care for the skin.
