Microderabrasion crystals

OK I bought a couple of jars from ebay (supposedly what is used in salons) but I'm not sure what to do w/it now. I know it's supposed to be mixed w/a mild soap, but how much? Like, one part crystals to 3 parts soap or what?

Please help!

Thanks Candi. I've actually already bought the kit from skinstore.com, but I figured I could save some $$ & possibly make a more effective cream w/my own crystals. I'm just afraid of burning my face off LOL.

Maybe I'll contact the seller for instructions.

Hey Maximus --

I'm not going to be much help here since I'm not familiar with that particular product, but I do have a kind-of funny story that has a moral.

I bought one of those over-the-counter microderm kits (has the lotion with the crystals in it and moisterizer for afterward) -- may have been loreal or something. Anyway, it says not to get near the eye area. Okay, makes sense. So I put it on and rub it over my skin for a couple of minutes (according to the directions) and then proceed to rinse it off by splashing water on my face over the sink (eyes closed). Okay...feels like it's all rinsed off. Open my eyes and OH THE PAIN -- yep, crystals were stuck in my eyelashes and went straight into my eyeballs when I opened them after rinsing.

Moral of the story: don't wash it off by splashing your face with water OR make sure you rinse for a VERY long time to ensure all crystals are GONE prior to opening eyes.

Yikes! That sounds painful! I wear contacts too so I can't even imagine!

Usually I do it right before showering so I don't have any residue left on my face.

Hey so do you guys notice a change in your skin? Please let me know if you think it is worth it. It kind of reminds me of Apree face scrub where you just sandpaper off a layer of skin.

Shonie, you do have amazing skin. I wanted to ask you but forgot. What is your skin care regimen? Or are you just lucky?

Marla --

You must be joking, right?! My skin is terrible! I have breakouts EVERYWHERE (hello, that's the reason for the back facial). Every little thing makes me break out. Chocolate (yes...I know dermatologists swear that it doesn't make you break out -- but it does make ME break out), peanut butter, nuts of any kind, milk products, stress, any kind of moisturizer, sunscreen, most foundation, blush, powder, purfumes, certain laundry detergent...it all makes me break out. I try to get facials about every couple of months...but sometimes I just don't bother ('cause my face breaks out immediately after -- but then gets better).

At one point I had an emergency appointment with a dermatologist because I had a huge rash all over my face! It started small and then blossomed over the course of a month. He diagnosed me with Rosacea and put me on anti-biotics (for a month). Seems like that's a little long to be taking anti-biotics. When my prescription ran out, I didn't get a refill. He was sorta upset with me and asked why I wasn't still taking them. Ummm...I dunno...taking anti-biotics on a constant basis seems wrong.

I'm not on anything now and didn't go back to this guy -- even though he's supposed to be "the guy". I'm starting to think doctors know very little about skin.

I'm really oily too. And did ya see the crows feet?

You're the one with the great skin! I would LOVE to have your skin. And Laura already mentioned your boobs :) I'd like to have those too! Then I'd be totally awesome.

I used to use microderm abrasion products on my face some, but I prefer to use acids to exfoliate now. The abraision seems so harsh and it doesn't get to some places very well.

No, really, I wasn't joking about your skin. I remembered you talking about facials & being high maintenance, so I figured that's why your skin looks so good. I was just wondering about specifics. There's something about people's face & skin to me. I don't tend to notice it too much unless it's really bad, but when it's good healthy skin, I really notice it. It stands out.

Shonie-
Perhaps a different doc would be more help to you. Do you have any friends etc. who can give you a glowing recomendation for a helpful deratologist? If you have any nurse or health related professional friends find out who they go to. They usually know who to stay away from, LOL.

Hi Candi, no I do my own acid program at home. I have researched tons, I'm on boards that talk a lot about it, and I started very slowly with weak acids to know how my skin would react. My skin is very sensitive and over reacts to just about everything so I go very slowly.

I use a 2% salicylic acid (same thing as asprin) cream daily. This is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid). I leave on, don't wash it off. I love this stuff!
I use 10% lactic or gycolic acid 2 times a week. These are AHA's and come in different pH's. The lower pH is more effective, but also have a higher risk of burning. I started by leaving these on only a few seconds, and slowly work the time up. These get washed off.

These are mild exfoliants and work as maintanence in a skin routine.

I'm working up to adding peels but my face skin isn't ready for it yet. I do use a 40% lactic acid peel on the rough spots of my knees and elbows. This stuff make my skin peel like I have a dried layer of glue on. It really has gotten rid of some *elephant hide* on my knees, and I am soooo grateful for that. I'll tell you what ever I know if you have any more questions. You can email me too with any questions.

I didn't know you could "do acid" at the doctor's office :) Wow! Very progressive.

Marla, thanks for saying I have good skin. I think you have much better skin, though. I have noticed that my skin is much better when I workout (sans makeup). It must be the sweating or something that helps.

I doubt I'll seek the advice of anymore doctors unless I have a major problem. Over the years I've spent probably thousands of dollars on procedures and products -- only to have the same problems and the same skin. I think I'll save my money. I've become extremely jaded when it comes to skin because I've been burned so many times. I just laugh when I'm getting a facial and someone suggests a product for me. Yeah...I pull out my checkbook right away! The only time I'll try something new is if I hear about it from a friend or on this site.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Maximus! Can I write "hijack" on a forum anymore? Well, I guess if you see me on the news being led away in handcuffs...you'll know it's not allowed.
