Michael Thurmond (long and rambling)

Whenever I get really depressed, as I am now, I go through a phase where I come home from work and get right into bed. All evening long I watch home shopping channels. They soothe me and make me feel better. In home shopping land, everybody is happy and everything is just great. And anyway, there are lots of people to feel superior to, like all the people who can't afford to contribute to their 401(k) accounts, but just have to buy those beaded fruit Christmas ornaments. (Somehow you just know that those are the people buying those ornaments).

Of course, I'm not completely immune to getting interested in some of the products. I mean, the Ryka shoes look good. Although how anyone can buy shoes without trying them on is beyond me. But I'll probably try them on the next time I'm at a shoe store.

So then Michael Thurmond comes on selling his diet and exercise plan kit. And I can't help thinking is there really anything to this idea that each person has her own magic combination of foods and exercise that will keep her fit for the rest of her life? Any shred of truth to it? What is so special about his exercises that they can be targeted to specific types of people so that they don't have to spend much time exercising? Has anyone found any of this to be true? Are there really any shortcuts out there?? My weight is okay, but I work out a fair amount and have never really seen much more than a little toning here and there, mostly in my legs. And even after 2 years of working out with Cathe, my arms are still barely toned at all.

Back to my hibernation and QVC.......

Hope all my Cathe friends are well. See you again when I come up for air,
Nancy

I've never heard of Michael Thurmond, but I can offer my own humble opinion (and everyone is entitled to my opinion):

There is no one magic formula of nutrition and exercise, and anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you something.

There are no shortcuts to health and fitness but there are many potholes, and many of these potholes can be found on QVC.

Never underestimate the Barnum and Bailey quality of the "diet" and fitness industries.

Never underestimate the power of consistency and persistence. And never try to find those for sale. You can't buy it, you can only earn it.

You haven't posted here what you mean by "2 years of working out with Cathe", but my guess is if you posted a brief but descriptive exercise history of modes, time spent each week and specific workouts you'd get some pretty good suggestions as to how to beef things up a bit - pun intended.

LOL Ajock!! You mean this is not what Cathe means by Low Max??

My lying-in-bed-while-depressed time is completely non-negotiable despite all well-meaning attempts by my DH to get me up. All I can say is, fortunately, it doesn't happen very often. Kids, do not try this at home!

Thanks, Ajock. I needed that reality check. All this TV-watching is reducing my IQ and screwing up my head.

Love ya,
Nancy

No Nancy....I do NOT buy those ornaments!!! Do they sell coffee...:7

I have often wondered if there are specific things that worked for specific people. I think sometimes they are. I know the struggle gets harder as we age. I think if I were exercising in my 20's like I am now...I'd weigh about 90 lbs!!!

When I started the Zone in 98 I got great results, not using Cathe all the time but more like traditional gym workouts. I ran faster than ever...I was working out alot. But after a few years it didn't seem to work anymore. Then my DH and I went thru alot of stress, and I got injured and started doing ALOT of Cathe, my diet went to pot and in about 3 years I gained 15 lbs even though I was exercising like mad!

In May of 2004...I changed my diet to vegetarian and started a P90X rotation. The workouts are tough but I was not spending as much time working out as I had previously. I lost the weight I needed to and even a little more and was totally surprised. I never thought at 45 I could do that.

So for me anyway I know it is alot of eating clean that gets results. I feel great and look at vegetarianism as a way of life, not a diet. My injury subsided as the weight came off...DUH!! So back to running and training...

I am sure different things work for different people....its finding the right thing for YOU that seems to be the key....:)...Carole

Hey there darling. I am more concerned with you taking care of the depression than the exercise and diet thing. I personally have experience dealing and am happy to discuss this with you off line. Don't go it alone.

Let me also give you the best advice I ever got: Acceptance is key. Accept you for who you are; accept that there are no magic formulas to make the outside perfect; accept that even on QVC everyone is air brushed, girdled and Botoxed into a frozen icon of unattainability; and accept most of all that you were born with the tools to be healthy and happy.

Ever notice why we on this forum oare drawn to Cathe? I dare say it is what she radiates from within as much or more than the workouts and her physique (although both of thise are majorly inspriing!).

Here to help. Take good care.

Re depression, and "the exercise and diet thing" -

More and more solid research is coming in every day that testifies to the mentally and emotionally healing qualities of sound, sensible nutrition and sound, consistent exercise. A small but growing number of therapists are becoming more receptive to prescribing or encouraging exercise as part of their clients' therapeutic regimens. And this only stands to reason. Exercise is just plain good for you physically, and the brain is a physical apparatus so the brain benefits too in its emotional spheres as well as intellectual spheres.

Me, if I go for two days without a good, fun tub-thumping workout I'm morose, sluggish, stiff, weirded out in the appetite department (my appetite goes down and what I can stomach narrows down) and an all-around pain in the @$$ to be around.

I think so many of us STAY with Cathe because she promotes an aura of strength and vitality in her marketing and self-presentation rather tha focusing on aesthetics. Notice the name of her company is "Step N Motion", NOT some tedious "XXX-Body" thing That is what sets the tone for her entire enduring customer base, including me.

This is the Eat Right for your Blood Type guy, isn't it? I bought the book (used from Amazon, so it only cost me a few dollars). I read a bit of it, but I don't "buy" the theory. The thing that really lost my interest was saying I shouldn't eat tomatoes. Tomatoes are an extremely healthy food (not to mention one of my favorites since I could eat solids!) It also says that I should do slow, relaxing exercises. Which don't do any good for me except make me sleepy! I've tried yoga. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Did Tai Chi, better - but not exactly what I'd call a "fitness" exercise.

He's full of it.

Donna,

He is not the Blood Type guy, he is the guy that appears on Extreme Makeovers and he could use a bit of a workout himself. He does not look very fit to me.

Carole, my favorite coffee buddy! Good to "see" you, girlfriend!

If you're not interested in beaded fruit, they've got a 5-ft. tall dancing snowman with cheeks that actually light up. I almost got out of bed to get my credit card for that one. :+

Hi Nancy! I was just wondering the other day where you've been. I'm glad to see you feel better enough to post and I hope you feel even better soon.

I don't know anything about Michael Thurmond but it makes sense that certain types of food and exercise might "agree" with some people more or less than others for a variety of reasons, not just biochemical. It sounds way oversimplistic, though, that "each person has her own magic combination of foods and exercise that will keep her fit for the rest of her life." (What is his definition of "fit" anyway?)

Since I started working out with Cathe 3 years ago, I've gotten so much fitter but I've also started to educate myself about fitness more and I REALLY try to pay attention to what does and doesn't work for me personally. After all these years, this tuning in has been the magic bullet, and the more I pay attention to my body, the fitter I seem to become.

As far as nutrition goes, I try to eat a variety of healthy foods every day but am not averse to what many here would consider unhealthy food choices. Moderation works well for me but may not work for everyone.

Thanks, Susan. Just recuperating from a rough patch in my life. It was a stressful time, when I had to be strong for others. Now is my time to heal and process, and get my energy back. And, of course, watch QVC. :) I'm sure I'll be back to my old self soon.

I'm sorry you had such a tough time but I'm sure whoever needed your support got it in spades.

You're a big girl and seem to know what you need at times like these. There are worse things than QVC!:)

Yes, there definitely IS a special combination of food and exercise that will make YOU the best you have ever been. Just send me 4 payments of $39.95, and I'll tell you all about it. }(

By the way: Thurmond is on HSN, not QVC (not that I ever watch such things;-)

Nancy:

You are right, your in bed time is non-negotiable. Keep it. It works and is necessary. I am going through a bad patch right now too so, my sympathies. Let's hope we both surface from it soon with renewed energy to continue.

Save the energizer bunny stuff for later....

Clare

Wow....a 5 ft snowman, dancing....how cool! I should spend more time in bed...:)...I do hope you get thru this difficult time soon Nancy....I have missed your posts....and of course your smiling coffee pic....

Your coffee buddy....:)...Carole

Now I can't decide whether to send my money to HSN or to Kathryn. :+

On a serious note, healing time really is important. Sometimes you need to emotionally process what you've been through and just lick your wounds. I don't like to rush it; just like to let it run it's course. Invariably, I emerge refreshed and ready to face the world again. For me, it's just a natural part of life.
