Michael Phelps

I think it sends that message that even the most elite athletes are human and make mistakes. It hopefully will prevent the swimmers you coach from making the same mistake.

And it sends the message that it is high time for all of us to stop idealizing atheletes or other people in the public eye, putting them on a pedestal and expect that they don't ever trip.

Somewhat agreed - that means we should also stop idolizing certain politicians also.

Not me Carola - they get ten barrels of dirt just like everybody else.

Speaking of politicians - did you see Mitt's answer to the economic crisis?

As a mother of young, adult sons I just have to say that Michael Phelps is just that. A young adult. I did lots of things I'm not particularly proud of but it's life experiences that make us who we are. I imagine it's very difficult to live under the microscope of life. You still have to grow up and experience things. I'm not saying that drinking and smoking a bong is okay, but we've all done something that people wouldn't approve of. At least I know I have. I choose not to throw stones.

And if we don't like it, well, then maybe his endorsements dry up, maybe they don't.

I read the following today in the newspaper:

"Earlier Thursday, cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. announced it wouldn't renew its sponsorship contract with Phelps, saying his behaviour is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg." The swimmer appeared on the company's cereal boxes after his Olympic triumph."

Hey everyone, guess what I'm listening to: Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women"! Just thought I'd share...:0)

Kids do stupid things, and 23/24 is still a kid. Even if he can vote and legally drink, he's a kid. Studies have shown that people do not think of long term consequences until they are over 25. I have seen that in my own kids.

Yes, he's a celebrity, but I have to admire him for admitting he made a mistake, and he has come out and said that the punishment he has received is just and fair (including losing Kelloggs as a sponsor). So many supposed heros think they are above everything and should not be punished. Seriously, we all make mistakes - its how we react to those mistakes that separates the people worthy of notice from those who are not. I have not seen anything that makes me think Michael Phelps is not an upstanding young man who did some stupid things and got caught.

With my first husband Catherine... Who was 23 when we got married (I was 28). Live and learn. My current DH is 14 years older than I am - and I like that sooo much better.

I think this is all overrated. Who cares! He's not hurting anyone but himself. How many of us did stupid things when we were younger. With all the trash that's on TV and radio, alot talk about a lot worse than smoking a blunt. You have a female artist talking about kissing a girl and how she liked it. I saw a cartoon the other day where a dog was cussing. OMG! What is this world coming to!

Puff, Puff, Pass! Let the boy be.

hehe..... Yup! :p

Really dumb...

I just had to say this ~

What an idiot . . .

Someone my son - and millions of kids - looked up to. It was interesting when my son rolled his eyes when it was mentioned on the tv and then shook his head in disgust.

His mother must be furious - I would be. Like I tell my child "Don't do anything stupid that reflects on us as parents - you will regret it."

He should know by now that he is looked up to and viewed as a role model for scores of kids who want to be just like him, and that should make him & anyone else in his situation feel a responsibility to act accordingly. He did not learn from that DUI he got after the last Olymipics, and will learn that he can't keep on being given another chance. Like it or not, he is viewed as a hero, and he needs to take a page out of a REAL hero's book, the pilot of the plane that went down in the Hudson.

Quite frankly, I think the world would be a little less hostile if some people enjoyed a special brownie once in a while.

Trouble is then we'd get nothing resolved in this country because everyone would just be sleepy and hungry:) Then again all the "I loooove you's" might not be so bad.
