Hey everybody I have a question about the mercury in tuna. I read in a pregnancy mag. that expectant mothers shouldn't eat more that 2 cans of tuna a week because of the mercury in it. Is the mercury levels in tuna harmful to women who are not pregnant and also what other fish have high levels of mercury?

I believe fresh tuna also has mecury in it. I do know that our fat cells store mecury. If you are planning to have kids in the future, you may also want to stear clear of lots of tuna. My pediatrician said not to give any tuna to my kids because mecury can affect neurological function.

For myself personally, if it is not safe for a developing baby or safe for my kids then I dont' want to eat it myself.

The oceans and rivers and lakes are all polluted to some degree. The higher on the food chain the type of fish is, the more pollutants, heavy metals included, it has accumulated in its body. The offshore fish, farthest from people are the cleanest, but I don't remember what kind they are. Freshwater fish are generally the worst, although a specific pristine Rocky Mountain lake may be safe, you know, it all depends on local conditions.

I avoid fish except very occasionally, maybe once a month. I eat a mostly plant-based diet.
