Mary Fortney (stall mats)

I was reading a thread a while back when you were all talking about concrete flooring in your basements. I read with interest because I have been exercising for 15 years on carpet and pad over concrete. I usually get along fine, but occasionally my knees and sometimes my shins bother me a little. I went to my local IFA and purchased 2 4x6 stall mats. I exercised on them yesterday and my question is, do your stall mats move when you are exercising? Mine are sitting on top of my carpet and even though I put weight plates on each corner they still move. Any suggestions? I do like them and I feel like they lessen the impact on my knees. Good thing since my current rotation is CTX. (This is my first time posting, I have been lurking for months and learned so much from this "educated crowd"!!)

Hi,
I have these stall mats in my basement. They are wall to wall in my workout room and directly over the cement so they do not move at all. If you have a "Shag Style" carpet I can see why they would move around as you work out on them. Not sure how you might be able to avoid that. Hopefully someone else might have some ideas. I know that someone used a carpet pad under them and it worked well, but they may have put them wall to wall also.

Hi, I am curious about this also. I have been considering buying them too. I also remember someone mentioning that they squeaked while working out on them. If any one can add to that that would be great. I workout in a room across the hall from my sons bedroom. Is the squeaking enough it may wake him? Thanks.

Hi Sammy I have noticed that the squeaking doesn't seem as bad as when I first got them. They sat in the cold garage for over a week before I got them into my workout room so maybe it took a while for them to warm up????
Anyway, if noise is a problem someone mentioned www.greatmats.com (If I remember correctly). They are foam rather then rubber so they should not squeak. They seem more expensive but also lock together so if you are putting them over carpet they will still probably move but will not seperate apart.

They are also light weight and easier to move around should you need to move them. They may not have the life of the stall mats because most foams break down over time. I would guess these greatmats life span is in the order of over 5 or 10 years (and I am totally guessing here???? - just something to check into before buying).

I haven't noticed any squeaking at all but I know that there is a "rough side" to this stall mat and a "smooth side". When I was laying them down I thought that the "rough side" was a little more "cushy" or "forgiving" that the smooth side. So I am exercizing on this more cushy side and I really like it. I just wish I could find a way to keep them from slowly edging apart. I thought about purchasing one of those rubber pads that you put under area rugs to keep them from sliding. Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks DawnW and redrocks,
Thanks for the info. I just envisioned dragging my ever accommodating husband to buy Stall mats and then having to tell him they are too squeaky. So I am glad for your input. Dawn I did look at greatmats.com and they look good also, but do cost more. I am leaning toward the stall mats still. redrocks I'll be interested in here your solution to the moving on carpet.
Thanks for your help,

Sammy
