Hi Maribeth,
I so appreciate your sharing your education and experience with us here, and you are just so smart, that well, I can't resist asking you this question...here goes...Is air-popped popcorn a simple carb or a complex carb?

Any answer at all (even 'hey that's too goofy I'm not answering it' he he just kiddin') would be great...Thanks!!!

Kathy

RE: Bump

oooh...i'm starting to get a little embarrassed about my question...maybe I should've prefaced this thread by naming it "SUPER SUPER trivial question"...

Hey Kath,

Don't feel bad ... Maribeth is really busy. I would suspect that you'll see her responding soon possibly even this weekend.

If not, I'll give it a whirl.

Hey, Kathy!
Sorry I missed your post yesterday. Veggies are considered complex carbs. Air popped popcorn is a cooked form of corn, so it is a complex carb.

The simple carbs are those consisting of a single sugar--either a monosaccharide or a disaccharide. Complex carbs consist of long chains of monosaccharides or disaccharides all hooked together.

Hope this helps!

This is not a goofy question! I have always wondered this myself because I am a pop-corn addict!

YES!!!
Thank you, Maribeth!

I am a serious popcorn addict so this is very good news.
:):):)
Thank you thank you thank you!!

Kathy,

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but you might want to be careful with how much popcorn you eat. My uncle used to eat TONS and he developed an intestinal or stomach condition because of it. Back then I think he said it was Diverticulitis. But I am not sure. I just know that the coarse parts of the popcorn can cause problems in the stomach and intestinal tract. Might run this one by Maribeth though, as I am not "for sure" that my uncle knew what he was talking about!!!!

naughtoj,
Thank you for the input. I was under the impression that people gor diverticulitis because their bodies were not used to processing fiber, so that makes the passageways unconditioned for anything rough at all to pass through. IF this is true, that would be no problem for me because I am a scary fiber queen. BUT, I could be wrong, and perhaps I should do a little investigating on the matter, as I would be viceless without my little popcorn habit :)!!!

Here's a definition.

Diverticular disease is a sometimes painful condition that develops when pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the colon, part of the large intestine. These pouches may be smaller than a pencil lead or larger than 0.25 in. (6.35 mm) in diameter.

The condition tends to occur in developed countries, where diets often consist of foods that are low in fiber. Without fiber to add bulk to the stool, the colon must exert more pressure than usual to move the stool forward.

Oh one more thing ...

Popcorn can cause this because another common cause of this is a seed getting lodged in the intestine and getting infected.

But still ... FIBER RULES!
