Hi ladies. We are having great weather for reunion weekend, which is good because many of the social/eating activities are outside. Yesterday afternoon I went to a seminar entitled "Women who've gone places." Among the speakers were some pretty impressive folks--here are short bios for 2:
Mildred Emory Persinger, Hollins class of 1939: Mildred is a dedicated activist on the local, national, and international levels. She has served on several U.S. presidential commissions on women and represented the YWCA at the U.N.
Ellen Reighley Malcolm, Hollins class of 1969: founder and president of EMILY's list--a network of more than 100,000 men and women committed to recruiting and funding viable women candidates.
There are roughly 385 alumnae here representing the classes of 1939, 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2007. Adding in family members and guests, there are over 500 people here this weekend. Last night, dinner was in the Hollins riding center. It's a beautiful facility and Shadowpup would probably really like it. The horses were a main attraction particularly for the children. The only thing about the riding center is that the floor is this wonderfully soft brown dirt--so when I got back to the hotel, I had to scrub my feet. After dinner, my class had a little get together to socialize and view a slide show of our college days.
This morning we had the alumnae parade around front quad which really is quite a hoot and then gathered in the chapel for speeches, class reports on fundraising, and awards to alum for outstanding service. One of the women who received an award was Elizabeth Fentress Goodwin, class of 1969. She is the co-founder of the National Down Syndrome Society whose purpose is to education, provide funds for research, and advocate at all levels on behalf of individuals with Down Syndrome.
After the alumane celebration in the chapel, official class pictures were taken. Our class had a nice lunch of shrimp and grilled chicken salad in the Beale Garden. Afterwards, I headed back to the hotel, changed my clothes, and went to the gym. Did 65 minutes of pyramid weights and core. Now I'm on a little breather before heading back.
Janie: Powermax is one of my favorites. It is not an easy workout. The first time I did powermax I felt breathless after the warmup!~michelle
