Lunges vs. Elevated Lunges

Is there any benefit to doing forward lunges onto a step or bench? Does it hit the muscles differently? More hamstring, maybe? Less knee stress? I'm not sure, so I thought I'd ask the educated crowd.

I like doing lunges with the front foot on the 4" step platform. It allows me to go a bit deeper (and hit the glute/ham area more) while still keeping my knee from going over my toe. Karen Andes recommends doing lunges this was in her book 'A Woman's Book of Strength." In general, she shows moves that are safer for the knees, but still very effective.
