i was reading a magazine (can't remember which one) but they were talking about a BACK BEND lunge. she said to put one foot in front of the other and bend backwards. do ou think this would be effective as regular lunges hurt my knees???

thanks

I have a hard time envisioning this as something that would hurt your knees (or back).

If regular lunges hurt your knees, try them with the forward foot on the step platform, or avoid doing front lunges and do only rear lunges and stationary lunges, which make it easier to control pressure on the front knee.

HTH!

Not Cathe here but it definitely sounds like a yoga posture. There are three different warrior postures I am familiar with and probably many variations of incorporating back bends with them......some using one arm and sometimes using both - sometimes with hands clasped in prayer position and then doing a back bend while in a lunge - many different ways to do this.....

Effectiveness: I have always enjoyed incorporating yoga into my workouts on a weekly basis - the holding of the lunge works your stabilizer muscles as well and doing the back bend stretches your body while also forcing you to work those stabilizers and balance.....

hope that sort of answers your questions even though i am not cathe here - just trying to be helpful - I am sure you could bust out a yoga book and find the correct name of the posture.

Oops! Sorry, I meant to say: "I have a hard time envisioning this, and it seems like something that would hurt your knees (or back." (quite different!).;-)
