with all of this talk of clean eating, i wanted to know what your take was of lunch meat. i usually eat boars head which says it has no preservatives. is it considered clean or should i replace it with grilled chicken breast?

I usually eat the lunch meat I get at Whole Foods. It says it has no nitrates, no antibiotics, etc. Having said that, I *think* chicken breast is probably better for you overall. I'm always hearing that lunch meats are something you should stay away from. I'm sure someone else(Kathryn?) will know better and have a better explanation than me.:)

Most lunch meat is loaded with chemical preservatives, nitrates, etc. You are probably also eating antibiotics (which they use because factory-farmed animals have so many diseases, many of which are becoming antibiotic-resistant). The USDA recommends that at-risk people avoid it, or reheat it to a certain temperature. Here's a link to an article about that:

I don't really know if organic lunch meat is totally clean, but it must be safer than the regular stuff.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but I find the idea of eating anything's head totally nauseating (but then, I am a vegan so that could have something to do with it). Intuitively, I'd say that it would not be considered clean. I could be wrong however. Chicken is usually loaded with antibiotics as well: http://www.fda.gov/Fdac/features/2001/101_chic.html
If you want to go that route, I'd be careful to choose organic chicken. I think eating "safe" meat is quite a bit more expensive, and it can also be difficult to find. But for those who don't want to give meat up, I'd say it's worth the expense/effort to go with the best possible stuff.

Egad!! Me too! But I'm sure the OP was talking about the Boars Head BRAND of deli meats -- not an actual boars head -- Ewwwwwwww -- lol!

I LOVE lunch meat & as an Atkins follower it's one of my staples. So I do consider it clean eating, it's zero carbs & often I just roll it up w/cheese for my own version of a "sandwich."

Thanks for correcting me Michele! Obviously, I am clueless when it comes to brands (other than Oscar Meyer which has been drilled into our heads since the beginning of time!).

Amy, I'm always happy to be of service. That comment just struck me so funny, but then, I remember as a kid my mom serving up cows tongue (EWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!), so I guess your original interpretation isn't so strange after all;) :7
