Looking for a solution for a concrete floor

Hey Everyone

I have come to the realization that some of my foot issues (Plantar fasciitis) could be from working out on a concrete floor. I just bought new cross trainer shoes (NB 1010) and new running shoes too but have still been having problems. I have been putting a spongy mat down (it is a treadmill mat from a gym) but it is only about 1/4" thick.

Does anyone have any suggestions. I have been working out really hard with either running (outdoor) or cathe tapes 5-6 days a week. Right now I just finished STS and am taking a break to hopefully let it heal, but I don't want to loose momentum! Would those puzzle piece mats be enough... I could pilfer some from the kids play area, would they be any better than what I already have?

Thanks
Heather

My workout room is a bit overkill, but I have 3/4" rubber mats (horse trailer mats) for rigidity and a little give. I got from Farm and Fleet and then I put 1/2" puzzle piece foam mats over the top for cushioning.

You might want to consider a more solid mat (1/4" is probably good enough) and then use foam puzzle pieces over the top. JMHUO (JMH uneducated O). Unless budget is not a consideration and then just put a gymnasium floor in. ;)

You know what is crazy. When we first moved in the floor was covered in the barn type mats that you are talking about. But we had to remove them as the floor underneath was moulding (badly). But maybe I can put 4 back down or something. Man they were really heavy and it took us all day to move 24 of them. That was a workout as they are so awkward.

Wouldn't that be a great option to just put in a new gym floor!

check this out!!

i have been investigating the same thing ever since our son learned to crawl and walk. i hate our floors and want something more cushy and more comfortable to work out on. Some are pricey and they also have a "value" level.

I have cement floors throughout my house. In the gym I have used the linking child mats; you can get them at any home improvement store. They have been enough for me to prevent Plantar fasciitis. The other thing that helped me was stretching and yoga once a week. If I don't do one long yoga workout during the week my feet ache. Go figure.

Great site! I bookmarked it for future reference!

On the point of plantar fasciitis, I have that and it's funny, my doctor gave me exercises (calf stretches, actually) to do and I never did them. I thought it was silly. Just since I started running 3 days a week, it has begun to resolve. The reason: I stretch a lot more before and after running than I do for any other workouts, which makes me get my calf stretches in and, surprisingly, it has pretty much relieved the PF!

Thanks for the flooring link!

I don't have concrete floors, but I have puzzlemats over a tile floor and they work great! I got mine at Lowes.

This is what I did for my concrete floor and it has worked wonderfully. I went to Lowes and bought their best padding (they had some in the odd shaped pile) and then I went over to their clearance carpet and found a bound rug and walked out of there with both 8x10 for under $75.00. I use carpet tape to keep it in place. Peggy

i have the puzzle mat things too. i love them. i got mine at academy. i also do not have concrete floors. we have wood floors in our house and we do not have a foundation. our house is on pier & beam. and i love that too. when i go to stores and walk around on concrete floors it makes my legs ache. i never want a house w/a concrete foundation. too hard on the feet. we have live here for 26 yrs. i can't imagine walking around on concrete all day.

heather, i also have PF, i got custom orthotics many years ago and that is the only thing that resolved mine. i had all the other treatments, including a cortisone shot, which was VERY PAINFUL, and it only worked for 2 mon., so i finally got the orthotics and it has been over 10 yrs and i still have the same pair. i don't have to wear them all the time now, though. but i have other feet problems, tendonitis in my heels and just foot pain. i just figure it is from working out for 20 yrs.

anyway, hope you find a solution.
