Limited but healthy diet possible?

My 10 year old daughter has been diagnosed with acid reflex. It's been causing her a lot of pain and we're eliminating the foods that seem to affect her. These include: citris fruits, dairy products, tomatoes, beans, bell peppers, onions, brocolli, chocolate, spices and fried foods. Some people also have problems with whole grains and we're seeing if those bother her this week.

If anyone here has the same problem, how do you deal with the restrictions? Is it possible to eliminate those foods and still have enough vitamins and fiber in the diet? I dont like to feed my family white flour or sugar but I'm finding it hard to figure out ways to maintain a mostly whole foods diet especially if the whole grains are going to be a problem. Should I be talking to a nutritionist or give her vitamins to make sure that she's not lacking anything?

Sorry for being so long but hopefully I'll get some advice and if I dont, it helped just writing this out and sitting here thinking about it :)

I think you have a pretty fair challenge on your hands. My suggestion, given the extensive dietary constraints AND your daughter's age, is to get a second medical opinion AND to begin working with a registered dietician who specializes in pediatric dietary restrictions.

Hi Dawn,

Your poor daughter! I hope she starts to feel better soon. Even though there seem to be a lot of restrictions, I think there are still a lot of whole foods available that might be okay. Does your daughter like any kind of berries? As far as fruit, bananas, pears, apples, etc. tend not to be so acidic. There are also a lot of "milder" vegetables. If whole grains bother her, that will probably be a challenge. A nutritionist sounds like a good idea, even if you just go once to hear an opinion. Maybe he or she will give you some ideas or say that adding vitamins is a good option. Good luck!

This will be so challenging for you. As a mother is so difficult having to deal with such restricted diet. I think everyone's suggestion of you going to a nutritionist is a good idea.

Could it be possible that she has a food intolerance? I don't have trouble with so many foods, however, I seem to have a food intolerance for raw onions and other vegetables. I can consume very small amount of these foods and be OK if I over do it, then I can't even sleep. I can eat cooked onions for example but if I have the amount of raw onions in a deli sandwich I pay a price.

Good luck to both of you!
