Ligament pain in groin area!! OUCH

LHK

Cathlete
I'm wondering if anyone can offer some insight or advice:
I'm 27 weeks along, and for the last month I've been experiencing pain in my right innermost thigh- way up high, right where my right leg connects to my left leg but a bit off center...
I thought I may have strained a ligament, so I rested it for TWO weeks (meaning no walks, jogs or workouts) and it gave no relief at all. It hurts when I'm getting in and out of a car, in and out of bed, rolling over in bed (that's a big one) or getting up from a chair. The pain feels like a strained tissue, but sometimes it also burns.

I told my Dr at my 25 week visit, and he just said it was round ligament pain, and that it wouldn't affect the baby, and to do what I could.

But I want relief! I hope this doesn't last for the next three months or more! Since the 2 week break offered no relief, I am now back to walking or jogging every day (mostly walking). I might as well! Have you experienced this? What is it? What can I do?

Any and all advice is welcome!
Thanks-
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I definitely agree with your doctor. Sounds like classic round ligament pain to me too. The round ligaments are like "tie downs" for the uterus. They go from the sides of the uterus down to the labia. During pregnancy they often stretch from 2 - 12 inches. The can be quite bothersome for a lot of women. I have one suggestion to help minimize the discomfort. Try to keep your hipbones in a straight line when you are working out and even in your day to day activities for that matter. When you are reaching across a countertop in the kitchen or up in a cabinet to get something, turn your whole body toward the cabinet or countertop rather than twisting your torso. This will keep some of the "stretch" off of the ligament during such activities. Hope this little bit helps. Good luck and keep us informed.

Sheila,
Thank you! Since reading your reply, I did some looking into what round ligament pain is, and you're right! That seems to be it! I didn't realize that round ligament pain could reach as far as the inner thighs, but it can. I will definitely try a warm pack for relief at home.

So do you think I can still walk and jog as I am able? There is no real reason to rest it since it won't heal anyway, right? (I'll also ask the Dr this on Tuesday but I thought I'd ask you first)

Thanks again for your reply.

Lisa,

I have been having a lot of ligament pain, too. I have noticed two things that really seem to aggravate it. (1) Doing 'too much' (walking around Disneyland, running to my car throught the rain) would cause pain either one or two days later. (2) Carrying my toddler too much. You would think it would be more of a back issue, but carrying him I can really feel the pulling of my uterus. It hurts.

I have one of those maternity support belts, and I think it does help a little. This is my second PG, and it is much different (more soreness) than the first, I think due to everything being 'used' already! LOL

HTH.

Lisa,

I would definitely ask your caregiver when you see him or her on Tuesday. Listen to your body, keep your hipbones in line and do only what is comfortable for you workout-wise. In plain words "if it hurts, don't do it."

Take care and keep us posted.

Hi Lisa - just wanted to add that I'm having ligament pain too, especially today. I got a little overzealous doing Christi Taylor yesterday, and now I can hardly walk.

Someone mentioned a support belt - I have one, and found that they do help with ligament discomfort during workouts - but began having pain in the sides of my hips (from reduced range of motion there) that was much worse. If you can borrow one before you buy, that might be a good idea. Email me if you're interested in trying mine - I'm at [email protected].

Tracy-

Thanks so much for your kind offer! But I went ahead and ordered one from Babycenter. I think it will help; I just hope it doesn't get too hot to use it!

My ligament is killing me today- I walked 80 minutes Sunday and 40 minutes Monday.

Looking forward to giving this a try-
Lisa
