Lifting isn't really exercise...

at least not like cardio. Oy. My good friend just had cosmetic surgery & isn't supposed to w/o for 6 weeks. It has only been two. She really just started with the basics of lifting maybe a month ago, and inconsistently at that. So, she thought maybe she could do "weights" since it doesn't take the same exertion as cardio.

After I removed my jaw from the floor I gently, AHEM, reminded her that lifting is VERY important (more so than cardio) and if it is that easy then you aren't working nearly as hard as you should be.

Mmmm K. My friend just perpetuates what I feel way too many women don't understand about fitness in general. Yeah, yeah. I know guys are included, but you get the idea. Hmph.

*heads off to curl soup cans*

I don't understand why, of the 45+ women I see in bootcamp, I can count on ONE HAND the number of women who are even willing to ATTEMPT straight leg pushups; I won't even tell you how many grab 5lbs when I say "grab heavy weights". *DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!*

What I just love is when women friends ask me "how can I get rid of this jiggle," and point to their triceps. I tell them to lift weights. But all they want to do are the triceps exercises! With, oh, something that weighs about as much as a soup can.

Deb, I think this will always be a problem. I get so frustrated. My forearms were hurting a few weeks ago because I had upped my bicep curl wt and my sister was like "that's from lifting wts" Like it was a BAAAAAAAD thing. I politely said "I know what it's from" and changed the subject. Every problem I have is "from lifting wts" LOL!!!

>Oh lordy. Let us know when she says "I won't lift heavy
>weights because I don't want to bulk up." }(

But it's no wonder. I recently saw an infomercial for some program (thinking Debbie Sievers Slim in 6 - maybe?) where they were selling exercise bands - suggesting them instead of weights because "weights make women too bulky". So despite all that we know (thank goodness we're an "EC") those allegedly "in the know" will perpetuate that falsehood. And most women will continue to believe it. Know what - let them - I'll just keep my weights thank you very much. :)

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. To view my webpage go to: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=202302&supid=166016627

This is funny, kind of reminds me of my mom. My mom is a sales agent for a home builder and spends a lot of time sitting in model homes waiting for customers to come in. She asked me for some DVD's she could do during downtime. I was like "um, Mom, aren't you wearing a dress and heels to work?" Her answer was funny - "well I don't want to sweat, I just want to lift weights!"

Shamefully, I admit I went back to light cardio 10 days post op.

I did not regret it though.

I did not lift weights; I purchased Cathe's beginner videos until I got strong enough to do my advanced Cathe videos.

I agree - lifting is just as important as cardio - especially as we age.

Now I do one day all cardio and one day all weights.

I can really tell a difference in my body's tone and I think I am losing weight -- I'm scared of scales.

When women ask how come I don't have flabby arms at age 52, I tell them I do weight training.

But they are so freaking scared of ending up looking like a man.

Yeah, right. Cathe and her crew lift heavy weights and none of them could pass as men!

That is hilarous -- many people have the misconception of lifting weights as being being a wuss way of working out.

And have you ever noticed how some of these women who demonstrate moves or on the cover of "fitness magazines" have no muscular definition?

They just look like sticks to me.

"I'm so afraid of bulking!"

AS IF hugely muscular people (mostly men, women really aren't designed tht way) haven't worked incredibly hard to get those muscles. I think it's hilarious that so many women continue to harp on about "bulking." How I WISH we could bulk easily! lol

Oh! It just drives me crazy when women think they'll bulk up. Or when they think all they need is cardio. x(

I am constantly preaching to my classes that if they don't 'feel' it - "DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE HEAVIER WEIGHTS! It shouldn't be easy!!"

How come I never get this reaction from the women I know when they ask what I do? They want to know what I do, I tell them. They accept it. What they do with it from there, I don't know. Maybe it's because they see that I'm a very small person, even with lifting weights, so I'm the "proof of the pudding" - so to speak.

Oh thank god for this thread!!!!

My mother is 50 fits into this crowd you're discussing. EVERY day that I talk to her, she complains that she's "gained 3 lbs since yesterday" and she "has to get this weight off".
I point out to her that it's water weight, and needs to stop weighing herself everyday. That it's physically impossible to gain 3 lbs of fat overnight... etc, etc...

It falls on deaf ears. Her version of "working out" is walking around the local track at the high school for a mile. And while I'm happy that she does SOMETHING, it's nowhere near what she could be doing.

When I suggest that she does some hard cardio and lifts some weights, she tells me that she "doesn't like to sweat"...and then starts complaining again about how heavy she is.

It's maddening!!!!

Melimcn,I can understand your frustration,I can't even get my mom to walk one mile and she a good 40pds overweight! Shes always complaining about it,every monday she wants to start a diet, only to give up in the middle of the day x( ! And I tell her what would help like walking and lifting. Goes in one ear and out the other! Shes 52 and I get worried about her health!

As for lifting,I love it alot better than cardio as a matter of fact just finished doing some weight training about an hour ago...feels great! It never even crossed my mind that I would get bulky, not worried about it!

Oh yeah, one of my biggest pet peeves! I don't subscribe but sometimes I see mags like Shape in the doc's office & I think "what shape?" They're a bunch of 19 YO models who haven't picked up anything heavier than a tube of mascara in their lives. Give me one week w/them at the gym, I'll show them SHAPE!!!! :p

Hi Donna,

I agree!

I am a very small person. My bones are tiny. My ring finger is a 4.5 and my wrist is below 6 inches.

I have lifted heavy (for a female) for years and I don't look bulked up at all. Nice definition, yes. Bulked up, no!

I am 52 and I love to sweat, lift, and do cardio.

And daily weigh ins are frustrating since water weight can fluctuate so much.

I used to weigh like 6 times per day -- when I had my little eating disorder.

Now I don't go near a scale except at my doctor's office.

I just go by how my clothes fit.
