Levitation holds

Yup, those ones at the beginning of Core Max Segment One. Two questions:

1. Am I "cheating" if I don't spread my fingers out on the floor while lifting my body up but instead either make a fist and hold it "knuckles down" or use a flat hand?? While doing them the way Cathe shows, my wrists are way too stressed!

2. Is it "cheating" if I lock my legs before lifting? If I put my legs into "indian style" and then "lock" each toe in before lifting, it helps me to focus on the lift rather than keeping my feet up off of the floor and my legs in the correct position.

I am thinking "no" for #1 and "yes" for #2, but wondering everyone's opinions!

Christine :)

Edited to fix my lousy typing...I type WAY TOO FAST for my own good ;)

cheating? are you kidding? if you can do this move in any capacity, my hat is off to you! I brace myself, move hands around, and all sorts of stuff to get me off the ground!

I say anything goes! I think I am starting to get somewhat lifted. Maybe some day soon I will get completely off the floor.;-)

I don't consider either of those modifications "cheating." And even if they were, so what? If they help you do the move, then they are working, so keep it up!

I'm with Debbie: if you can get yourself off the floor at all in this move, bravo!

Hey, I do them. Check out my picture of it. Did Core Max 1 with son last night and he told me how "masculine" my neck is looking these days! LOL! Interpretation to mean "STRONG". LOL! Anyhow, I seem to strain my neck more when I do them, not sure why, but I get my bottom off the floor.

Remember, Cathe says that just making the effort works your core. I can only do them while in the lotus position which gets my legs up off the floor. I still keep trying to do it Cathe's way but have had no luck so far.

Hi Christine! I never do them anymore & I don't even care. I didn't see much purpose to it quite frankly. Kathy:D

Christine, you're not cheating. Cathe said attempting the move ALONE already works the core. Your #1 comment actually gave me an idea. I'll try it that way next time my wrists hurt. I use Jai's hand position to get myself up -- it's easier on my wrist, but certainly NOT on my core.

Due to RA in my wrists, I use dumbbells to hold my wrists straight while attempting to do these holds. As I have mentioned earlier, this body don't leviate. I will continue to attempt them but I don't see my butt ever coming off the ground.

Here's how I cheat. I sit my butt on my step and criss cross my legs out in front. When I lift up on my hands, my feet may be dangling, but still all of me is up. Cheating - yes, but I agree with everyone else - just making the effort gets that warmth in there and works those muscles.

I am up to four levitation holds and I use Jai's hand placement on my left hand and for some reason I have to make a fist with my right hand so that my knuckles are down. I'm hoping to flatten my right hand out, as that kills!

But, which ever method works for you, is the method that works!

I think my arms are too short! LOL! Do you think that's possible?

If you have a long(er) torso, I bet that does play into these.

My arms are too short also, just like the rest of me. LOL

I can't use that excuse...I don't consider my arms short and using dumbbells adds even more length... I just have to face it... I'm a wimp...:9

It seems like my arms are too short if I try the move with flat hands. But if you look carefully at how Cathe is doing the move, she's up on her fingers (with the bend at where the fingers join the palm rather than at the wrist--which also takes some stress off the wrist). This effectively makes your arms "longer." It works for me (kind of!).

Hey all you short-armed people! :) Here's an idea - this is what I do, because I can't hold myself up on the tips of my fingers - it hurts my hands. I take two yoga blocks and put them on either side of me - I orient them so the long-and-skinny side is facing up (and down) - then I grab onto it like a handle to hoist myself up for the levitation holds. It's much easier on the hands. :)

I can barely get my butt off the ground but I do feel my core anyway like Cathe says. Just trying is still working it.
