Lets talk Flaxseed..

Okay, I have been using whole ground flaxseed meal by Bobs Red Mill ( trader joes). I wonder if I'm wasting my time...should I buy whole flax and ground it myself?

deb

Not necessarily. The homeground stuff is fresher, but if you store it in the freezer and it's not old when you buy it, and smells fresh, your trader joe's stuff is fine too.

Thanks Liane,
I just hope that all the health benefits are present even if it is already ground in the bag...yanno? deb:)

You're not wasting your time, it's still good for you, but it is fresher and probably cheaper to grind it yourself. Takes about 10 seconds in a electric spice mill/coffee grinder -about $10 at Walmart. I love it, in everything from yogurt, to salad, to oatmeal and you can always grind what you need for the whole day in the morning.

I like to add it to oatmeal and put it in my breakfast smoothies.
I've discovered a "golden flax" that Now Foods sells. It tastes better than the regular brown stuff (and is prettier, too!). It comes in whole or ground versions. I used to grind my own once a week, but have since gotten lazy and buy the ground stuff and keep it in the freezer.

your not waisting your time on it. I just realized I had some good stuff the other day.I make soap and I use it for exfoliation in some of my bars. Well, I just asked my supplier if I could eat this and she said ,by all means. The one I have is organic, for what ever that means, She always buys the natural good stuff. It's pretty fluffy I would say. I tried it yesterday in my Cottage cheese. Not bad. Definatly takes some getting used to. Now I'll use it every day and when I don't have something i can put it in, I'll take my pills. I have noticed a great difference in my own self.
So I say use what you have, try grinding it if you can take it better but either way. Tis good stuff.

>Okay, pardon my ignorance, but what does flaxseed to for you?
> I am totally clueless.

It's an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids (the same fatty acids that are in fish). It also is a good source of fiber (which means it's a good idea to start slowly with it and not eat too much too soon!).
