Leslie Sansone

Does anyone have/use any of her dvds? They look slightly annoying but as I'm in the middle of my 2nd trimester I'm having to do more low-impact (sob!) and looking for some variety. Any thoughts?

I have several - good workouts for when you don't want too much impact, although you can ramp up the intensity at will. No brainers, too, so there's no choreography to learn. Yeah, go ahead & try them.

I have a friend, actually two friends who use Leslie Sansone DVDs. They really enjoy them and one of them has lost quite a bit of weight doing it. I have never done the workouts so I don't know how they are.

I just recently started using Leslie and I am actually enjoying them. I just started feeling exhausted after too much step and dreading each workout and subsequently doing less and less of the workout. Originally I found Leslie so annoying I couldn't stand it but now I am starting to like her. These are truly no brainers. Nothing to learn, you can make the movements bigger, you can use light weights if you want. My favorites are Walk Slim 4 Fast Miles--5 Mile Advanced--Walk Slim 4 Really Big Miles. Check out her site where she has clips you can watch.

thanks so much for the replies! Phyllis, the ones you mentioned were the pnes I was looking at on Collage. I think I'll order one and try it out. Thanks again!

I don't have any of her workouts, but I did get a Michelle Dozois walking DVD that I like for those days that Phyllis described. I've watched some of LS on Exercise On Demand when I was thinking of getting that type of workout dvd, and she just didn't click with me.

Kate, I definitely think Leslie is worth a try. I used her DVD's (and still do) when I need a workout but I just don't have it in me to do anything strenuous. I relied on her to get me back into exercise following a 2 year break from workouts.

The ones you're planning to get are perfect for you. I'll just warn you that Leslie can get on your nerves a bit. I mean the woman just never shuts up -- LMAO! But she does come across with genuine sincerity, and WTH, you just have to admire anyone who can turn 3 or 4 steps into a multimillion dollar industry. ;)

I also agree with TeTe's suggestion for Michelle Dozois, and look at Madeleine Lewis, too.

I have alot of her dvds. I would use them for add ons to get a walk in or when I was pregnant. I really like her advanced 5 mile walk the best, because each mile is different and you can walk from 3-5 miles. Her 3 mile weight loss walk and walk slim dvds are good too.
She is chatty but it is a good workout. Good Luck!

Mary

thanks so much for the continuing suggestions. I ordered a couple at deepdiscount.com this morning. I'll check out the other options mentioned too. shhhhhh! Don't tell DH!;)

It doesn't get easier than LS. I did her, then The FIRM, then Cathe. She's great for people with a lot of weight to lose, who are older, or who have any type of physical limitation. Personally, I love anyone who feels fitness is for EVERYONE.

I have no personal knowledge of the limitations of pregnancy but I'm guessing that If you're fairly fit you might be able to do Cathe's very basic dvd workouts for beginner/intermediate. If you're fit, LS will drive you nuts.

"If you're fit, LS will drive you nuts."

Ditto. I attempted one of her dvds ('3 really fast miles' I think) and the only increase in heart rate was from me seeing myself in the mirror and laughing out loud. According to the owner of the video (I borrowed it) that one's particularly poor quality, but I just didn't have the motivation to try another one. I was doing the biggest range of motion possible and modifying almost everything to make it tougher, but nothing. I was thinking, "How are these people in the video sweating?" Maybe it's the studio lights or something. I don't understand why anyone who has the option to walk outdoors would do a LS dvd instead. It boggles me. I have never watched the clock more intensely than during that dvd. Oh yes, and I had to switch to 'music only' right away. The cackling was unbearable for me.

aaaahhhh!!

You ladies are scaring me that I made a really bad purchase! Not that I'm expecting Cathe quality but sometimes lately I need some low impact on-the-floor stuff. I can still keep up with all of my favorite cathes (Imax2, BM2, etc) but there are some days when my round ligaments are aching and I need something mindless/not too taxing on my aging, growing pregnant bod!

I've watched some previews on Collage and yes, she does seem annoying but I figure I can deal with it for another 18 weeks! It's not like I'm going to be doing them everyday. I need some new workouts and DH will flip out if he sees me trying out ASC2!

Regarding walking outdoors...if the girls are napping and that's the only time I can get in the day to exercise I've gotta do something quiet in the great room while they're conked out in my room. I sure wish I could get outside to walk everyday, but with their schedule and DH's it's just not possible.

At least I got them for not too much money. there's always ebay, right?!

Hmm. maybe I should recommend these to my sis in law who is expecting. Shes not into Cathe or heavy working out but she does want to exercise enough for health and to not gain too much weight. Let us know how you like them. ;)

Kate, to be sure, Leslie is NO MATCH for Cathe. They couldn't be less alike. Leslie might just bore you to tears, but she does have a huge following nonetheless. I would say that once you have your baby, chances are slim that you'll get much use out of her workouts UNLESS you have some illness or injury where you can't workout for an extended period of time. After not working out for nearly 2 years, Leslie was about the only instructor I could follow. ;)

There are scores of threads on VF about Leslie Sansone. Here's the most recent one -- maybe this will give you a better idea of what she's like and who she appeals too. Also, I would say that Michelle Dozois and Madeleine Lewis are a little more complex but still low impact.

Well I just want to add that I went from the Firm classics in the late '80's to Cathe and always dissed Leslie but lately I have had to eat my words. Years of step is just starting to get to me and it exhausts me some days and I dread the next cardio day. Soo I tried a Leslie and actually enjoyed myself. Nothing to learn, felt good after and even her chatter didn't bother me like it used to. If I walk outdoors which I do often either alone or with a friend I find that I don't keep up the pace. Also I am not doing sidesteps, hamstring curls, kicks or large arm movements. If I walk with my dog it is stop and sniff. I think there are times when Leslie fills a need for taking it a little less intense or maybe a lot less intense but that's OK. I might walk with Leslie but I lift with Cathe and I am finding that combination works for me right now.

Jess, I'll report back when I do one! I also ordered Preggi Bellies. All the cardio is done sitting on a stability ball. One other pg Catheite said it's actually pretty good. Looks like fun on Collage.

Michele, Thanks for the link - it was helpful. I'll also check out the other instructors you mentioned.

LOL Amy! I remember watching my friend's mom do this when I was in elementary school!

Phylis, I bought 2 of them because they were so cheap. Maybe I'll do one and return the other. I prob. don't need 2 but they were so cheap I couldn't resist! Glad you found what works for you - that's half the battle isn't it? Re the "nothing to learn" comment - that's actually kind of what I want. (I still can't believe I typed that!) But with preggo-brain I find it hard to catch on to new stuff right now. I tried StrikeZone last week and I could NOT get it together.

DH and my midwives will appreciate that I'm lowering my intensity a bit.

I really appreciate everyone's helpful comments here! Thank you so much!

You know, I've been thinking for some time that Cathe is missing a golden opportunity. I'm 47 and there's no way I'm going to be doing cheerleader jumps at 55, you know? We all know that Cathe's hardcore following worship her for making the absolute toughest workouts around and I wouldn't want to see her alienate her long-time core. But as her core followers age, it's inevitable that they're going to start falling back. No matter how fit a person is for their age, bones and joints repair less quickly and aches and pains naturally take longer to recover from as we become older - and long-term damage becomes a real consideration. As long as Cathe is able to keep pounding away and thrilling the hardcore, more power to her. But If she were to create more cardio routines along the lines of LowMax (tough on your heart/easy on your joints) IN ADDITION TO, NOT INSTEAD OF, the super-tough workouts she's known for it would a) Open up for her an entirely new audience filled with people are presently too intimidated to try her workouts now and b) Help her to hang onto (and gather more) older people. I know I can't handle Cathe's super hardcore cardio (IMAX3, at 47?) and the only non-plyo cardio dvd workout I find doable but truly challenging is LowMax. All the workouts on the market are either loaded with plyos or twinkie stuff. The only reason I can think of for why Cathe isn't already catering to both audiences is because there's only 24 hours in a day. I guess every instructor has their signature style... but that's a shame. One by one, people are switching out Cathe for the Leslie Sansone's of dvd fitness. Give Leslie points for seeing a need and filling it. Now if we could just get some tougher low-impact. I know I'd love to see LowMax 2,3,4,5,6,...7....8... Meanwhile, there's Cardio Coach.

I do leslie sonsone in the afternoon. For some reason I feel like I still need to get my 10,000 steps a day - in addition to everything else. I have her 5 mile walk, it also includes 3 mile "premixes". Sometimes I will walk holding a med ball or 3lb weights. Granted in is not Cathe, but I do break a sweat!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Amy Bento will be able to film her Hip Hop Walk Dynamics this fall. I think Amy can produce a high quality, hi intensity, joint friendly workout with serious fun factor and awesome music. I would love to see Cathe do more Low Max's, maybe with fewer knee repeaters though :)

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.
