Learning to run...

Hey everyone! As the weather gets nicer I'm trying to take more of my workouts outdoors and would really like to take up running. This of course is in addition to my Cathe videos, not to replace them. I was wondering if anyone had some good stratgies for getting started on a good running routine. I'm in pretty good cardiovascular shape and can make it through all of Imax2 finding it challenging but doable, but for some reason I find running hard. Is it better to start a routine where I do a run/walk combination? Or is it better to just run as far as I can in one shot and then just keep working my way up? If anyone has any suggestions it would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Angela,
Absolutely you should start with a run/walk routine to prevent injury and work your way up. I recommend you check out www.runnersworld.com and go to the "Beginning" or "Beginners" tab (can't remember the actual name). One of the recommendations is a 30/30 program for run/walking. Even though you do Cathe all the time, running is a much more taxing exercise on your body so you need to work up to it.

When I first started years ago, I believe I did a 5 minute warm-up walk, then run for 5 min, walk for 1 min and repeat that for about 5 or 6 times, then 5-10 minute cool-down walk. You slowly increase your running times over about a 30 day period, then before you know it your're running a mile, then 2 miles, then 3 and more. I love running and run 4 or 5 miles once or twice a week to cross train.

Good luck!

Running just sucks for now because your body is not used to it. It took me a long time to get used to it, but now it feels much easier than a Cathe cardio tape!!

Pay attention to what your body is telling you though. Shin Splints can come on quick and take forever to go away!! I may not always adhere to the 10% rule, but I watch closely for those aches and pains....
