Latic Acid in breat milk

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-01 AT 01:01AM (Est)[p]I just read that if you work out heavily the latic acid can get in your breast milk and the baby will not want to drink it. Is this true? I have had 2 failed attempts at breast feeding and really really really want to succeed this time.

How much exercise is too much? Should I be concentrating more on weight work now and more cardio after baby?

Please, any advice would be helpful.

RE: Latic Acid in breaSt milk

I was very worried about this exact thing with my first baby, and I remember a woman telling me the baby may look like she is drinking but really is not because of the taste. I, of course, had to be a freak and pumped and saved that for after the workout. Anyway, number two didn't get such luxuries and I did not notice anything different. She drank and was happy and full after,(I remember her burps told me she did in fact eat) even right after a hard Cathe or swimming workout. I'm thinking that even if it does taste different its not enough to stop the baby from drinking. That is my experience with it, and I nursed both for 6 1/2 months with no troubles at all.

The following is a quote from the "Healthy Moms Perinatal Fitness Instructor Manual." It is based on the most current research regarding the "lactic acid - breastmilk controversy."

Lactic Acid, Exercise and Breastmilk

Studies now show that regular, sustained and vigorous aerobic exercise at moderate to high intensity does not alter the quality or quantity of breastmilk. Unless exercise intensity is very high (above the anaerobic threshold), there is little change in lactate levels in either maternal blood or breastmilk.

Hope this helps. I nursed two babies, one actually for over a year, and never had a problem with my babies nursing after hard workouts. Healthy Moms also offers a very tough workout done with a stroller called "Powerstroll." The majority of our moms nurse their babies right after the class.

Hi,
I also nursed my son for exactly one year from his birth. He never showed any signs of not drinking due to a strange taste. He still loved to nurse and his weight gain was always a little more than average.

I was one of those moms at Powerstroll who would breastfeed after class (and sometimes during squats and abs LOL :) And Sheila can attest that my "little" guy wasn't exactly wasting away -- he was a regular baby Buddha!

RE: Latic Acid in breast milk

Hi Alli,

I just wanted to offer you some further reassurance regarding breastfeeding and working out. I just had a baby boy on October 3 and am breasfeeding. I currently workout six days a week and have fed my son immediately after a workout without any problems. Heck, I've even fed him in the middle of an intense workout when he just couldn't wait a minute longer. Hope this helps!

Matter of fact, he feeding right now, while I sit here typing with one hand. I wish you alot of luck with the pregnancy and the baby and hope you have great success with breastfeeding. It really is a great experience!
