Late Night/Dessert Eaters Listen Up!!!!!

I have ALWAYS been an after dinner dessert eater - The thought of not having dessert killed my soul. The thought of no sugar made me want to live no longer. Well.....

I woke up Monday and decided that NO MORE!!! Not literally - ever, but I was going to get a handle on this addiction and I think I am on to something. I wanted to share it with you who are like me.

I have been reading French Women Don't Get Fat. Great little, light read. I decided to apply some of the ideas from the book and some of my own. All this is stuff we have heard but I decided to really do it. Here is what I decided: (This may not be a revelation to any of you, I may just be slow to catch on)

I will eat S-L-O-W-L-Y. I mean it too - S-L-O-W-L-Y. Tiny bites. I mean TINY!!! I was not doing this before. I shoveled in my food fast cuz I thought I had better things to do. Now I really taste my food. I kinda roll it on my tongue over my taste buds when it is in my mouth. I CHEW, CHEW, CHEW. Now, you really have to think to do this.

I give myself a half portion of what I normally would. Guess what? It is enough!!! I eat B-fast, Snack, Lunch, Snack & Dinner. I am ok with nothing afterwards. I don't know why... it is just working.

Too, I am not eating sugar or bread. I can have anything else I want within reason and if it is a healthy food.

I decided to not be hungry or stuffed. If my stomache is telling me to eat - eat, but just eat a little. It is okay to put 1/2 your meal up when you are satisfied. You can always get it our later when you are hungry. After dinner have a cup or two of a yummy tea. If you just can't take it - have like 3-4 nuts and nibble on them.

Water - Water - Water.

I will eat what I want at dinner Saturday night, I will have a drink. But I will make sure it is something too good to pass up. If it is not, I will wait until something comes along that is - then eat. Small portion, very slowly.

And, of course, I will continue my love affair with my Cathe videos. Too I am going to add a 20 -30 leisure walk 2 times a week somewhere in my busy schedule. I may have to drive to a Home Depot during lunch to walk the isles (cuz it is too darn hot here to be outside) but that is what I will do.

I hope and pray that I can feel this way forever and not go back to my old bad habits.
I can already tell a differnce in just one week. Anyway, just wanted to share something that is finally working for me.

Way to go! Be sure to keep us posted on how things are going. I caught the end of this beautiful PBS show one day about food. It featured several famous chefs/cooks speaking on the importance of food feeding the soul. And I think the book you mention touches on that some. Eating slow to savor the aromas, spices, tastes, etc. but also to enjoy the company we are in. We forget to do that sometimes, to live in the moment. Good luck, and like I said keep us posted!

Hey, great idea! I've also read the book, and it has some good common sense advice. Sounds obvious, but sometimes you still need a reminder to slow down and savor. I'll try this too. Anything to keep me away from sweets at night!

What you're doing makes sense to me. When I was a kid we had "supper time". My mom hollered out the back door to come in for supper and we all sat down together and had our meal along with some lively conversation. Now I'm often alone at dinner time because my husband works about a 14 or 16 hour day, so I stand at the kitchen counter and shovel it in as fast as I can. We don't have children so I don't want to fuss just for me. We do better on the weekends, but for the rest of the week my eating habits are pathetic.;(
