Lat pulldowns: I thought only possible in the gym!

Cathe's got lat pulldowns w/ band in Low Impact Circuit. Has anyone done these? Any speculation? Does she truly mean pulling DOWN--where do you hook the band? Over your door? Or...I don't know...lie on your back and lift up your feet and somehow pull the band from around your legs?

I love lat pulldowns, but haven't been to a gym in years. Miss them!

I could be wrong, but maybe the exercise is this. You hold your hands overhead with the band in both hands then you do the pull down motion. You can adjust the tension by having your hands closer together on the band. Just speculation though, I really have no idea ;) .

One Side at a Time?

P90X does these with the B-Line bands and a door attachment, although I rig mine through an eye bolt in the ceiling. I'm interested to see how Cathe's doing them.
 
Based on the equipment seen in the picture this is my assessment. I think we will stand on the band and grasp each end of the band with the hand of the same side. Next, stretch both arms above yor head and pull down. I have seen something similar but not on video, so I can't be sure. I feel like I'm playing guess the number of beans in the jar :)

That's how I've seen it done (and it's the only variation with a band, without attaching it to something, that would give much tension).

LOL!

The one arm at a time idea sounds plausible. If I could escape my little kids, I'd run down to the basement where my band is, and give it a whirl.

I like the eyebolt in the ceiling idea, too. Eyebolts in general sound like very useful things to have in the ceiling. }( (feeling silly right now)

Well, still beans in a jar, but being the geek that I am, I did a search. Here's a plausible description...

BAND LAT PULL DOWNS

Starting Position: Begin by folding the band in half and grasping either end. Raise the band overhead to a position where your hands are separated leaving a light tension on the band.

The Motion: Pull the bands down and apart until your upper arms are parallel with the floor. Slowly extend your arms back to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions

Yep, that is real close to the motion that I saw, except that the people were standing on the longer bands, kinda like you do in band squats. I will go where Cathe leads me :p .

The way I picture this, it would be impossible (you can't 'pull down' a band if it is fastened---by your feet--at the floor)?
 
When I did lat pull-downs in the gym, my PT always had me lean back slightly from the hips and pull the bar down in FRONT of my face towards my chest. It has always been my understanding that pulling the bar down behind your head made you vulnerable to shoulder injury. Has anyone else heard this?
 
Maybe I'm not explaining right. The arms were overhead just like the picture above, causing the band to stretch. The ends of the bands were in the participants hands and they were pulling down, in a controlled release. The band used was like the one we use in the HC series so it was longer than the one in the picture. I don't know that this is what Cathe is doing, it was just something that I have seen used and I was taking a guess.

I just imagine taking a close grip on the band (like Cathe uses) & pulling out and down behind your head to simulate the machine in the gym. Yeah?

Yes, most trainers who are concerned about safety caution against the behind-the-head version.
 
Kari Anderson does this in an old video of hers. However, she holds one side stationary and pulls on the other side so you work one side at a time.
