Knee brace?

After spraining my knee during a workout, I'm considering using a knee brace from now on. What do I look for and where do I find one?

Hi Robin
I use a knee brace I hurt my knee a while ago and the brace I have had the most success is a black elastic type that I bought at a drug store. It just slips over and gives me the support I need. It doesn't have a knee hole in it It fits snug and I have been very happy with it. Susan G.

I got one at Walgreen's. It is black, with a hole where your knee cap goes and wraps around with velcro.

That's exactly the one I have. I also wear another one on my other knee--it just sits below the knee cap and velcros around. I got both at CVS.

Maybe if I'd worn them the other night I wouldn't be having the problem I'm having....x(

I learned when training for the 3-day that I have arthritis in my knee. My orthopedist gave me a brace by Genumedi - can't find it retail - had to get it through my doc - BUT they sold me extras so I could use them on the 3-day. Total stability! Elastic - no velcro - silicone ring around the knee cap - these are awesome braces! And after 60 miles of walking - my knees were problem free. (If you look at my 3-day pics in my pic trail you can see what the brace looks like.)

Robin - if you see your doctor again, you might want to ask him/her what type he/she recommends. I've worn one in the past that's the basic elastic sleeve with a hole for the knee cap. I got it at Wal-Mart (where else??). There are different sorts for more support. I wore mine when I was having trouble with the ligament on the inside side of my knee.

My friend, who is a long-time runner, has worn a type that is supposed to help stabilize the kneecap. It's basically a single thin strap that buckles and velcros around the knee. You put it just under the kneecap, right below the bend in your leg.
