Kids!!! True, Funny but Scarey story....

Yesterday late afternoon/early evening I was doing chores around the house. DH wasn't home b/c he was working overtime so it was just me, Joey and the dog. I always put a gate up in front of the stairs going up to the second floor so that my son doesn't try to climb them alone. I always keep all of the doors in my house shut unless I am in that particular room so that he doesn't wander into a room where I can not see him. He has free-range of the living room, kitchen and hallway only.

With that being said...I had emptied the kitchen garbage can and needed to take it outside. I walked out the back door which is in the kitchen, made sure the screen door was shut so that Joey couldn't push against it and fall out of it. The distance to the garbage can from the door is not far. A few steps, down the porch stairs, a few more steps and there you are. It takes SECONDS to do this. Well, apparently that is all of the time a child needs!

When I got back to my door it was locked! My almost 2 year old had managed to lock me out of the house! I almost died!!!! I was telling him to unlock it and I knew he understood me and he was trying to do it but couldn't figure it out! I waited a few minutes and when he was having no luck I ran next door to my neighbors to ask for something to pick a lock. While they were looking for a bobby pin or something I ran back to my house to check on Joey. The house is child-proofed but nothing is FULL-PROOF so I wanted to make sure he wasn't doing anything he shouldn't be. I checked the door when I got back just in case and...thank goodness, he had figured out how to unlock it!!!!

OMG! I was mortified that this had actually happened to me! I would have had to have my husband come home from work (30 mins away!) or worse, I would have had to call the cops who could have arrested me for negligence!!!! (not that I think I was being negligent...I was taking the garbage out which is all of 10 foot away!)

I told DH and he was laughing....I can laugh about it too but man was it scarey at the time! Ya just don't know what a kid is gonna do!

I think this happens a lot. My twins locked me in the basement on purpose when they were 2 1/2. They wanted to explore their older brother's bedroom. I went in the basment, heard the door slam and lock and heard their little footsteps running. I finally got them to unlock the door by bribing them with a cookie!

A friend of mine got locked in a room by her two year old dd. I don't know why the door locked from the outside, but she was renting a house and her two year old closed the door and locked it accidently. My friend tried telling her dd how to unlock the door and her dd started to cry because she didn't know how to and she got scared. Fortunately, my friend had her cordless phone with her and was able to call her dh to get her out!

I'm glad that Joey was safe and you didn't have to call anyone for help!

WOW Wendy!!!!! Scary, for sure. Very. I'm not sure what else to say. Even as the kids get older, it's scary...plain scary. A parents' job is definitely 24/7.

Now, may I share my own scary story that popped into my head while reading yours? Do you mind? I was across the street at my neighbor's house (and best friend....we literally are across the street and the kids and we adults are always back and forth our not-so-busy street). ANyway...I was on their porch, chatting, and the boys were all over shooting hoops on my driveway. I had asked my younger DS (4 at that time) to get a shopping back for me, so we could put something in it. I saw him go in the my house, grab the bag and when he came out into the garage, he came into my view with the bag ON HIS HEAD!!!!! He thought he was being funny and hiding! ACK! I SCREAMED at the top of my lungs and flew across that street.

You're right....just a second is all it takes. He was fine....but you think a child knows something and then that happens.

WOW....mommyhood is HARD!

Teri locked herself and our dog in the car in our driveway when she was 2. The keys were on the front seat, I had been trying to load my bike and her bike trailer onto the back and we were all going to the park for some exercise. I don't exactly recall how the doors got locked, but I had accidentally bumped the driver's side door shut with my butt and they were locked in. I had to have the police come and get the door open. It's quite common, actually. Thankfully, it was only in the 70's, so there wasn't any danger to them.

Wendy, you are not alone! When my husband was going to school we lived in an apartment on a split level like two story. I went to take the garbage out in my bare feet and DH (who was far from dear at that moment) left for school and locked the door behind him. My 18 month daughter was standing in the window ledge (the window was open and only the screen separated her from the ground). I had to run to his class a mile away in my bare feet for the keys. I was sobbing the whole way and must have been quite a sight! Thankfully she was safe. I really think her guardian angel was looking out for both of us. My heart still pounds after 23 years thinking about that incident.

~PHEW~ Thank goodness I'm not the only one! So I am not negligent...I am human! Thanks for making me feel better about it ladies!:)

I am sure DH and I will get a good laugh out of the story for years to come....:7 :7 :7 :7

LOL, but scary at the same time. Believe me, Wendy, I am not looking forward to when my grandson becomes mobile. I like having him stay where you put him!

Oh Tiggy! I am so, so glad Joey is okay and nothing else happened. These lil' buggers give us a heart attack at times, don't they?

Aiden has two speeds nowadays. Sleeping or sprinting.

I'm not gaining weight. I'm retaining food.

Wendy, how scary. I"m glad that everything is ok. What a little stinker!

Never got locked out (yet) but both my boys were in the car while I was helping my mom unload the trunk and my 5-year old crawled up front and he accidentally knocked the car into reverse. Both my boys went down my mom's driveway until the car hit a tree.
