Kickboxing - Kathy Smith or Keli Roberts

I have been thinking about trying kickboxing. I was wondering if anyone out there has tried either of Kathy Smith's new kickboxing tape or Keli Roberts' new tape. I might add that I have seen Tae Bo and do not really care for it.

Kathy Smith's seems like it might be a good learning tape and possibly so with Keli Roberts too.

Thanks for any information and pointers any of you can provide.

Kim,

I've tried both and their both great. I would say that Kathy's Tape is more of a beginner tape. It's not as intense as Keli's tape. The cardio section is shorter. Both have a sports specific toning section. I've done this section just once on each tape, I do prefer the more traditional lifting style.

In terms of style they are very similar. Both Kathy & Keli show the base moves and then do combos. Not at all like Taebo. Although, I've only done the Taebo Basics and the 8 minute tape, so I can't compare these tapes to the live series.

I prefer Keli's tape (Kickbutt Combatt)because it's longer and more intense, she includes some jump-roping in it, which helps get my heart rate get up.

One major difference is the price. Kathy's is 9.99 at targets, could be less, I just can't remember and Kickbutt runs for 29.00 or 30.00. You might want to wait for a CIA sale or get this one on the exhange at Vf.

Kathy's & Keli's Kickboxing Tapes

Kathy's is more of a low-intermediate and Keli's is more of a high-intermediate. While you will get a decent workout with both tapes (if you concentrate on intensity) I found Keli's tape to be very bland (too much boxing and not enough kicking for me).

Kathy's had more of a "fun factor". Plus you can't beat the price of only $10 compared to Keli's, which is $30. And you get the added bonus of Keli being in Kathy's tape (she's a co-instructor in the tape along with Keith Cooke).

I would start with Kathy's.

I also recommend Kathy's tape, as well as another tape that you can probably find at Walmart for around $9.99. Antoinette Ucuryo's (sp?) "Kick It" (not to be confused with Janis Saffel's "Kick It", which is an excellent, but long/advanced workout). It's a good intro to kickboxing, similar in style to Kathy Smith's. I'd rate it as beginner/intermediate (though I take up the intensity a bit by doing some double-time moves).

Hi Kim! You should definitely go for Kathy Smith. Just to get your form down pat. Don't do leg kicks higher than knee level until you can work your way up to hip level. Form is extremely important! I oughta know. I wasn't doing it correctly and experienced back soreness each time I did it. Now w/proper form and concentration I can lift higher than hip level. Also, once you've graduated from doing Kathy Smith, by all means buy Janis Saffell's "Kickbox Express" through CIA. She's AWESOME! Real great combinations and she's so cute and upbeat! You'll love it! Best of luck, Kathy

Another opinion on Janis Saffel

I agree that Janis is a fun instructor. I would, however, recommend "Kick It" over "Kickbox Express" (there seems to be somewhat of a concensus on that over on VF, also). Kick It is a much more polished effort. Janis' cuing is quite sloppy in Kickbox Express (sometimes she's doing one thing, cuing another, and neither is what you are supposed to be doing!). Kick It has some similar choreography to KE, but no jumproping. Just another suggestion. :0)
