Kickboxing and Upper Body Weight Work

workout junkie

Do you do kickboxing the day before or after an upper body workout, or do you put a day in between? Sometimes the day after an UB workout, I wonder if it's wise to do kickboxing. Not sure if all the punching will aggravate the joints - shoulders, elbows, etc., or keep the muscle from building.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Melissa

Usually my cardio's in the morning & weights after work, so occasionally I will do kickboxing on a day I do upper body work.

But typically I save it for my core days. I'll do a good long kickboxing workout & then follow it up w/Core Max or some weighted ab work.

YMMV, but I like to leave a day in between kickboxing/boxing and upper body, especially since I use weighted gloves for the kb/boxing. So I'll do kb/boxing on day 1, then lower body on day 2, then upper body weights on day 3. An alternative is to do an upper-body weight workout right after a kb workout. Ideally, I try to alernate upper and lower body emphasis throughout the week, in both cardio and weights.

I'm with Laura Max. I feel kickbox is like a total body workout without the weights, so I classify it as cardio.-and tack on abs afterwards (although they too get a great workout with kickboxing)

That's exactly why kickboxing is my cardio for core day, Deanie. B/c the entire workout engages the abs in some way.

Now if I could just drop that 5 lbs I gained this summer, you might actually be able to SEE my abs! x(

I use weighted gloves for kickboxing and I'm usually sore the next day in the back, shoulders, and maybe a little in the biceps. I will do a weight workout the next day, but only if it is chest and triceps as they do not normally get sore from kickboxing.

That's probably what I should do - leave a day in between UB and kickboxing. I haven't done a kickboxing workout for awhile and I can't remember how I incorporated it with my other workouts.

I like the idea of doing both in one day, but after a kickboxing workout, I don't know if I could give my all to an UB weight workout, unless it was short one. Actually, using weighted gloves for the workout then doing some push-ups & chin-ups might be a good idea.

Thanks!

That's why I was thinking I shouldn't do UB the day after kickboxing or vice versa (especially if I use weighted gloves). However, if I didn't use weighted gloves, it would be more of a cardio workout. But the muscles (and joints) are still worked, that's why I was unsure if it was wise to give them a rest or not...
